ATI driver problem on SUSE 10 with Radeon9600pro
 

Hi!
This is my first serious Linux experience (=n00b) so please be patient with me.

1. After successfully installing the distro (SUSE 10), first thing is to install the 3D enabled proprietary ATI driver. After installing it, I try to configure it with the "fglrxconfig". No problems so far. New xconf is generated. But here it begins: after reboot my keyboard layout is AUTOMATICALLY changed from EN/US to godknowswhat (azbuka or somethin´) Oo. So I cant login anywhere or do anything. Autologin still logs me in (when I leave it ON) but this DEFINITELY got to be a BUG (and a NASTY one!).

2. This is also weird: After a fresh install, when I reboot back to WinXP the onboard NIC (and FireWire) is completely disbled/not recognised (I dont see it even in the WinXP HardwareManager). When I reboot once more from WinXP to WinXP everything works fine again. It only happens when I reboot from SUSE into WinXP. (When I shut down my PC completely from SUSE, turn it on again and boot into WinXP the NIC works fine). My mainboard: ASUS P5P800 (on board 1000MBit LAN, and FireWire I suppose)

I need 3D enabled for my work, and also still need to get something done in Windows. I was pretty much sure SUSE will be a good start after trying some other distros, but this absolutely left me down to Windows again.

Those certainly do appear to be fairly uncommon if not rare.

1.) Once installed an the new xorg.conf is generaed, edit the xorg.conf with kwrite or kate. (as root type "kwrite xorg.conf") and repair the xorg.conf BEFORE you reboot. You should make a backup of the original before using fglrxconfig, so it should be easy to tell what needs to be editted in the keyboard layout section of the file. My guess is: during fglrx config there is a section asking for desired keyboard layout, standard is 0 I blieve, which is en/us, perhaps you hit a different key...

2.) That one is very odd... I am gonna ask... how about after a FULL shutdown unplug? I have heard of a couple of strange things upon rebooting wihout shutting down between linux kernels, certain bios enbled onboard nics(settings vary there, sometimes has to be wake-on-lan enabled, others just nic enabled) and windows. You can try bios update, playing with the settings... kernel upgrade to latest(or just install suse 10.1 instead of 10, it is mere weeks away)... otherwise... I don't know for sur about this one. It is indeed rare and odd.

I indeed chose a different layout for the first several times (It was Slovak/QWERTY layout) but its strange anyway, cause this layout does not use anything close to azbuka-its the same as EN/US layout except for some special characters on the numbers in the alphabetic part of my keyboard and some other minorities (like: .-/:= etc.) which I absolutely do not use for passwords. However, later I desperately chose EN/US layout at the beginning of the SUSE install and also in the fglrxconfig just to be sure, and the result was the same.... Hopefully editing the xorg.conf will solve this.

Well, after a full shutdown (when I choose to turn off my computer instead of reboot) the NIC is working in WinXP. I´ll check the BIOS settings again then. And I also think I saw some BIOS patches for my MB, so I will check them out and see.

Will post some news when I try out everything.
