I know it's a bit strange asking a Windows question on a 'Nix Forum but I'm wondering if anyone has tried running the Beta Windows 7 X-64 as a Virtual Machine on Open Suse 11.1 (64 bit version).
I have the 32 bit version in virtual box on debian testing 32 bit
why?
Hi there - just wondering on those cases where I really HAVE to use Windows whether it was worth while trying Windows 7 -- VISTA is a total dog especially as a Virtual Machine - from reading Windows 7 seems a lot better but it would be nice to get confirmation from people who,ve actually USED Windows 7.
I HAVE to have Windows sometimes for connecting to some corporate applications and also I run Photoshop CS4 - The GIMP is good but I still need Photoshop. Wine is making progress but still can't run Photoshop CS4. It's also quite good at running Microsoft office as is Cross Over Office (Open Office is fine but the spread sheet still can't compete with EXCEL I'm afraid.)
Dual Booting is also a pain -- a VM works fine normally -- XP as a VM was OK, Vista is a dog, which is why I was curious about Windows 7 before downloading it.
I am using openSUSE 10.3 with xVM Virtualbox. I have XP, Windows 7, Mandriva 2009, and openSUSE 11.1 all running as virtual machines. Windows 7 runs well enough by itself, but when I use it to access servers through mstsc, it is a dog. SLow, slow, slow, like the early days of PC Anywhere on a 14,400 modem! XP runs flawlessly in my environment and I regularly perform admin functions including software installs this way. I have already reported the results to Microboondongle, as if it will help. (I still have XP Pro in stock)
Windows 7 does run, where Vista did not. It is just a desktop, not useful for real computing.
I found Windows 7 64bit a little unstable in the VM, I couldn't pin the cause down very well. I decided to install it on an old HD, works okay. Its much better than Vista and in my opinion a step forward for Windows in general. But I will not be swapping from Opensuse. I will probably use it on my Windows Laptop when it is fully released.
As a follow-up to the original question, I have resolved the issue with SLI in openSUSE 11.1 and am now running 11.1. I also have all of the previously listed virtual machines running, less openSUSE 11.1. (No reason to run it virtually anymore, is there?) Windows 7 runs fine in a 64 bit base, although I am not running Windows 7 64 bit.
