Thumbs down another time with chaos => how to install w98 as 2nd os??

i spent one complete day in the beginning of this month, trying to install w98 additionally to suse 9.1. i need a windows-system since my digicam won't work with linux and i like to play quake3 and 1nsane online with friends. i chose w98 since i have it and can configure it quite well.

this one day was completely weird - "w98 installation cannot be completed because of another os's installation"; "boot sector is protected"; "boot sector cannot be written on"; "linux cannot be installed because of an unfinished windows-installation"... all kind of kombinations. i then turned my back on both (instead of throwing the pc out of my window, which was an alternative). knoppix and qtparted allowed me to rearrange my hda's.

my ~38gb are partitioned like that: http://home.arcor.de/bergenbilder/hdd270105.jpg
at first, i didn't do anything with the fat32 partitions since the day was used up, i was overloaded with anger and i needed the machine for my studies. today i tried this windows-installation - at first, it complained about the boot sector again. then, suddenly, "format c:" would work, which was not the case last time. installation was aborted several times because of errors, i did never come longer then the timezone-preference. "exceptional error 0d" was in my way all the time, additionally, windows informed me about writing in my boot-sector with every start.

starting from the hdd went directly to windows. i had no idea how to fix this elseway, so i tried the rescue-option from my suse 9.1 - cd. same thing happened as last time: asking for a rescue login it didn't accept my username and password, no single enter either. so the rescue-option was just not working...

knoppix then told me that the boot sector of hda1 might be damaged or too many filesystems are in use. i hoped to install linux without changing my data-hda2 then, which did not work. hda1 was ntfs, btw, and marked as a windows-partition, i have no idea, why.

the new-installation including a three-hour-update is finished now. but i still have no clue about how to get a second os, w98, working beside suse. if you have any idea, please tell me. i am getting a shortage of time soon again, since there are at least three university tasks coming up in february.

anyway, thanks for "listening"! i just need to share my... experiences...

best regards

the easiest way to dual boot is to install windows before linux. it makes things a lot simpler. try reading this: http://linuxiso.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23033 hope it helps

schanker21 speaks the gospel, Windows should be installed first, and Windows 98 is the perfect choice not only for your cam but because it is the fastest of the windows family, it is small and your cpu resources are available for the tasks ( gaming ) and not wasted on keeping the operating system going.

agree. When you install windows it thinks that it is better than any other OS'es existing on other partitions and basically ignores them. You have to alter some of the boot files to boot your linux os.

Although it is easier to install windows first, it's not much of deal to do it later also.

All you need is a Linux rescue CD (the standard boot CD will do the job) or a LiveCD (e.g. KNOPPIX). Boot from the CD and mount your root device. After that, chroot this device and run grub-install to write the bootloader into mbr. You may even use yast.

It is even easier if your boot-CD offers a repair-system. Then you just run repair and everything will be fine.

Yast system repair

i am still a newbie, so i understand nothing of this:

but thank you for your post! i am going to read your link!

about my question yesterday - is it possible to just start windows, without losing the "normal" starting into linux?? or will i need to do all these things named above afterwards?

thank you very much! regards

edit: that sounds good:
Quote:
# Errors due to manual editing of the boot loader (GRUB) or menu.lst can be corrected. Even if the boot loader was deleted entirely, the "Automatic Repair" can restore it. This procedure comprises the installation and full configuration of the boot loader (GRUB).

# Linux can no longer be booted after overwriting the master boot record with "fdisk /mbr" or "FIXMBR". "Automatic Repair" can solve this problem by installing the boot loader anew and performing all needed entries.

# Windows and Linux on one hard disk:
If one of the two operating systems can no longer be booted, the "Automatic Repair" can solve the problem. No matter in which order the two operating systems were installed, the GRUB boot loader is reinstalled or reconfigured correctly. If the entry for Windows was manually removed from GRUB, the "Automatic Repair" will restore the entry. The next time the system is powered up, the boot option "windows" will be available once more. Even after running fdisk /mbr or FIXMBR, which deletes the master boot record and only leaves the Windows boot option, the boot system can be repaired. In this case, the boot loader is reinstalled and automatically configured correctly. The next time the system is powered up, GRUB will offer both operating systems for booting.
but still there is no word about the rescue login. as i said in my original post, i tried the repair-function before. is there any place where to define my rescue login? or is it something that is common for all systems an can be found on the net...!?
