ALSA problems in 10.2

I've got a Dell Optimax 755 (dual-core 64-bit CPU) running Suse 10.2 64-bit version, and it uses the motherboard's onboard sound as far as I know. I've got problems with the ALSA side of things. While getting sound out isn't a particularly high-priority, there are a lot of applications that use the ALSA sound drivers it seems. For example the totem movie player comes up with these errors before bombing out:

Code:
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3982:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2145:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3982:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2145:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
It's not the only thing that displays these errors, but I can't think what other apps that so at the moment.

So what can I do to get rid of these errors and get sound some sound out?

If this is a new install, I would recommend going up to 10.3

it has a new version of alsa that may detect your sound card (considering that the Optiplex 755 is fairly new and ALSA in 10.2 doesn't support ICH8 sound on laptops to a full extent, and you have an ICH9, i would recommend upgrades)

I knew I should have mentioned the 10.3 issue in my original question! Unfortunately due to the nature of work I'm doing I have to use 10.2. I did start off with 10.3, but for various reasons too difficult to resolve it prevented me from doing certain things (e.g. various libraries compiled with the 10.2 compilers...).

Would installing the version of alsa that lives on 10.3 be possible on 10.2?
