After kernel security patch update, have two kernals in grub

The suse updater said 127 updates were available. I did the updates and one of them was the kernel. Now I have two kernel listings in the grub loader. Is this normal?

yes. if the new kernel screwed up your system, you'd still have the old one to use to get back in. normally rpm based systems will keep 2 kernels installed on purpose, sometimes more. if you no longer wish to keep the old kernel, you'll be able to remove it yourself with the rpm command, or via yast i assume.

Ok, that is a relief. I will test the new kernel. Does the new kernel reside in the same folder as the original kernel?

Yes. Why do you want to know?

acid_kewpie 08-29-2007 03:25 PM

well the kernel image itself is in /boot, but the bulk of the data is modules, which are all under /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/...

It boots fine with the new kernel. I wanted to know where the kernel is because I did not know how grub handled two kernels and if they needed to be in different folders.

well it doesn't matter how it deals with it... it just does, and it's none of grubs bussiness either actually. grub is long gone before much of the "good stuff" happens.
