Question What is de KDE parts plugin

I am curious I was going through the other plugins and then I find that in KDE parts plugin there is also a reference to pdf extensions. Is this not generating any kind of clash?

I'm sorry! Thats how I fixed it. The last things I can think of are:

1) make sure that you are typing the correct directions to your firefox/mozilla software

2) take into account what acanton says (see above), and try running the script several times so that it "settles".

3) try what EclipseAgent suggests.

I wish I knew more. Good luck!

- Marcos.

Smile Finally it worked

I installed the plugin twice (or maybe thrice) and it worked! Thank you all.

Do you have AppArmor enabled

When I first installed SuSE, I had the plugin working, then a couple days ago my wife called to ask why she couldn't open a pdf. Her default setting was to have the pdf open in Reader, outside the browser.

When I sat down to troubleshoot, I found that the plugin wasn't working on my account. I scoured the web, but was unable to find anything helpful (even trying to re-install the plugin multiple times). I did manage to get an error message if I tried opening a file locally, something about Acrobat not being in the PATH.

Checking my system logs, it showed SUBDOMAIN (aka AppArmor) was preventing execute access to acroread for firefox.

The solution was to use the yast wizards and give execute permission to the ruleset for firefox to acroread. This immediately solved my problem.

To me it appears that there is a clash between KDE parts and Adobe pdf. They both have pdf under the plugins. I quick fix, prior to the mention of this script, I simply went into edit, preferences, downloads, plugins and unchecked the Adobe PDF. It basically forced me to choose to open it, but not inside a browser. It's nice because it opens it in a larger and separate window.

I used a Firefox extension "PDF download" to give me better control over pdf files. Note that Firefox often leaves an unused blank tab or window when downloading. Extension "Disable Targets for Downloads" provides a solution for file associations you configure it for.

None of the above worked for me, I used Konqueror's Configure, Plugins, Netscape plugins section to show me where all of the plugin folders were on my system, and copied nppdf.so to each location.

I have the same issue. I am convinced it has something to do with the KDE parts thing in about: plugins. I have not been able to find anyone else with this issue - it seems to be an issue after upgrading from 1.0.7 to 1.5.0.1. This is running on KDE 3.5.1. Interestingly enough, the upgrade to 1.5 fixed my problems with Flash - go figure.

Edit: Just found this link: perhaps it will work - I have not actually tried it yet:

After doing research for about an hour I figured out the problem.

Problem: cannot open pdf in Firefox. When FF opened in console, you receive:
NPP_SetWindow
original_x_errhandler: (nil)
NPP_SetWindow

Cause:
KDE 3.5 installed w/ Firefox 1.5.01 installed with Acroread 7.01 installed.

Root cause: nppdf.so is not updated to work w/ Firefox 1.5.01.

Solution:
Install Acroread 7.05 RPM (used in Suse 10.1 Beta) and since 10.1 beta uses FF 1.5 the newer version of nppdf.so is installed in /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat7/Browser/intellilinux/nppdf.so

FF should pick up this plugin w/o you having to have it in your .mozilla folder or /opt/MozillaFirefox folder.

It sure solved my problem

Hope this solves everyone else's.

Here's the RPM i used to install Acroread 7.05:
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/SuSE-Linux/i...0.5-4.i586.rpm

Excellent helped me a great deal.

I installed to the following directories for it to work:

~/.firefox
~/.mozilla/firefox

Great thread very informative. Got Mozilla to open PDFs based on your directions, but I primarily use Firefox. I used: /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plug for my plugin and tried opt/Firefox/lib/plugin with no luck. Any suggestions?

I had some trouble with this as well and solved it by installing the plugin to ~/.mozilla/plugins and then adding this path in KDE Control Center -> Internet & Network -> Web Browser -> Plugins -> Netscape Plugins. After this was done I hit "Scan for New Plugins" and it worked.

P.S.: Sorry if this was suggested previously, I didn't read the whole thread.

May be stupid question but where is the ~ as in ~/.firefox. I can't find that sign, and it apparently is necessary because I couldn't get the command line to execute

~ stands for your home directory /home/{user-name} which is where the hidden directories that start with period are. In my SuSE system there is no ~/.firefox directory, ~/.mozilla/firefox is used.
