I just installed SuSE Linux 10.0 on my desktop and laptop, however, I realized that I know very little about it, and Linux in general. Due to that, I know just about nothing of what to search for on Google after all my searches turned out irrelevant.
Therefore, I turned my head towards this forum in hope of assistance and resuce.
1) Video a)
I managed to install the driver from ATI for my video card (9600PRO), however, when I click on ATI Control, it says "Drivers does not provide the Fire GL X11 extensions! Panel components will operate only partially". Is this a fatal issue, and can it be blamed for the points below?
b)
I tried testing the video card through glxgears, and it showed only 312 FPS. I understand that the normal rate is between 3000 and 4000. My question is, how can I fix this? Is this a result due to point 1a)?
c)
I have two monitors (both are Syncmaster 193T LCD), and I understand that there is something about Xinerama and xorg.conf. I tried configuring the xorg.conf file once guided by a tutorial, but it didn't work, and I ended up reinstalling SuSE, mainly because I saw no other option with my newbie Linux skills. I was wondering how to edit this xorg.conf file for it to work with my monitors and video card. Or is there some kind of script that can help you do it? I had a look at SaX2, but it didn't help.
2) HDD a)
I have two harddrives, both S/ATA. I installed SuSE on one, but I want to use the other aswell, mainly for storage. I was told that it should be in /mnt, but I can't find it there. It didn't show up during the installation process either. Both harddrives are on the motherboard, and both harddrives function flawlessly.
b)
The harddrive which I can't seem to find is currently in NTFS, but I want to fomat this to something which Linux can write to. How do I do this?
3) Audio a)
I understand that in SuSE10, they did not include any mp3 codec, and that you have to download it manually. However, when I search for one, I always end up with results as mp3 codec for xmms. Does anyone know where I can get a mp3 codec?
I realize that this is not a few issues, but rather many. I will be very greatful for any help. Thank you in advance.
Seeing that SuSE may be new to you, get to /media by clicking the My Computer icon. The command line interface is powerful but doesn't help you avoid all errors. Until you learn Linux, stick with YaST for configuration and use CLI to experiment with viewing. You can even run a GUI application from the command line and potentially get more warning and error messages than available running from the GUI desktop.
The tutorial was very helpful and fixed some software/codec issues. Thank you!
However, I'm afraid that the commands did not work. My Disk did not show up on /media, however I was able to find it when I typed hdparm /dev/sdb. However, all my attempt at formatting the drive have been unsucessful since I have no idea what to replace -v, -V, -t and all that with, or what to type after them. Hope somebody understands what I mean...
I tried clicking my way through the GUI desktop trying to find some where where I can format my second drive, but without result.
Are there any other good tutorials and guides which are recommended? I'm especially looking for a guide on how to edit the xorg.conf file. My last attempt (with the help of a guide) didn't work, and I had to reinstall SuSE.
It sounds like your using command line to format the drive. I recommend you look at YaST partitioner. It should be able to discover all track and sector parameters. It should also recommend other options like Rieser vs Ext. When in doubt, take its advice.
hi im also new to linux and have suse10 i have a few probelms i have verizon dsl sometimes when i start linux it wont connect to internet i have to reboot a few times to make it work i noticed when it doesnt work on top where it shows the ethernet connection icon it takes a long time to show with the clock and date also and also i cant get java to work i downloaded it and tryed to install it threw the terminal but no luck it is installed i see it on the sofware settings and also when i try to do a yast2 online update it says getting info from mirrors and stays like that for 5 min and then says update failed( suse.de/cgi-bin/suseservers.cgi) timed out those are the only things im having trouble with i am new to linux i like it so far.thank you
You can select a mirror closer to your location. You mentioned Verizon DSL so I assume you are in the US. The mirror you were using appears to be in Germany which would greatly extend the time to connect. Which version of SuSE are you using?
