9800 PRO glxgears blank

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Suse 9.2 (x86_64). I'm running two monitors in "Big Desktop" mode, each at 1600x1200.

When running glxgears, I get a frame rate of around 6500 fps, which would seem to indicate that hardware acceleration is being used. However, the glxgears window is completely black. If I stretch the window really large then I can see that the gears are there, but drawn way to the left of where they should be. This kind of thing happens in all OpenGL programs, not just glxgears.

Any idea what could be wrong, and how to fix it?
