(9.3) Firewire external NTFS disk access as root only

Any idea how to allow a USER access to an external Firewire disk (with a Windows NTFS file system on it.)
When it's connected with the USB connection --easily solved but a Firewire connection always gives the locked Icon on the user account whatever the permissions set by root -- root has no problem accessing the disk.

Anybody any solutions .

System comes up with the disk mounted in /media/ieee1394/disk.

This is accessible via Root but not a user whatever permissions are set.

I can use the USB connection but an advantage of firewire is that I can "Daisy chain" 2 or 3 of these disks without tying up the USB connections.

Cheers

Sorry, root only. It's external.
