Question 9.2 Sound issue

Hi Everyone,

I have been using mandrake for the last year and finally decided to upgrade to Suse 9.2 as I am tired of the strange issues and the new 2005 LE is a joke - looks like a kids version.

Anyway, I have installed from the iso on Suse's ftp for AMD64 and got the latest Nvidia video drivers installed and working and all is great except: I installed Doom3 and it runs really fast on 6600 Pci-e card but I have NO sound at all in the game. In KDE 3.3, the sound is great, however, tried running through a console as root and it will not run at all

If I run it through the icon native install file created and it runs perfect except the sound - My sound card is the one that is part of my MoBo - MSI Neo4 Nforce4 - any ideas

Thanks in advance,

TheSonic1

1) did you read the FAQ?

Alsa and multichannel sound

Starting with build 1286, DOOM III on Linux now supports both Alsa and OSS sound backends, as well as multichannel sound.

If you are having trouble with Alsa, here are a few things you can try:

*

instead of the default device, try using plughw:0, and surround51 for multichannel. A lot of Alsa installations have a misconfigured default device. You do that by passing +set s_alsa_pcm <alsa_device_name> on the command line.
*

if you are trying to get multichannel sound, make sure stereo works already. You switch between stereo and multichannel with +set s_numberOfSpeakers 2 and +set s_numberOfSpeakers 6
*

on amd64 systems you may need to get the snd-ioctl32 module loaded in

Then, if Alsa doesn't work, try using the OSS emulation ( +set s_driver oss ) .. and after that, just use plain OSS ( the OSS/Free implementation, or even better the OSS/Linux one from [WWW] OpenSound ). OSS is not an outdated and deprecated sound API. It turns out to be much easier to setup and operate than Alsa for a lot of people.
SNDCTL_DSP_SPEED failed to get the requested frequency 44100, got 48000

Deprecated: this issue should only happen if you use one of the old 1282 builds

The sound engine will only output 44.1KHz. This indicates that your sound processing cannot do this and suggests 48KHz instead. Depending on your setup, try to find a configuration that allows 44.1KHz. If you are running artsd for resampling/multiplexing, you can try to reconfigure with the following command: artsd -s 44100 -F 6 -S 256

I am going nuts trying to get proper sound with SuSE 9.2 and Doom3. I am only trying to get stereo. What I get is some sounds, and music, but no character voices (as well as some other voice tracks). I've set the proper OSS emulation for ALSA (can't do it with straight ALSA at all) in autoexec.cfg, and the proper number of speakers. I get a section that reads as follows (starting Doom3 from BASH):

------ OSS Sound Initialization ------
opened sound device '/dev/dsp'
ioctl SNDCTL_SYSINFO failed: Invalid argument
this ioctl is only available in OSS/Linux implementation. If you run OSS/Free, don't bother./dev/dsp - bit rate: 16, channels: 2, frequency: 44100
allocated a mix buffer of 16384 bytes
WARNING: ioctl SNDCTL_DSP_SETTRIGGER PCM_ENABLE_OUTPUT failed: Broken pipe

I can't figure out how to get "the snd-ioctl32 module loaded in" to save my life; anybody know what's being talked about there and how to do it?. I do have an AMD 64, MSI 6702.
Anybody have bones to throw?

I don't have the module snd-ioctl32.

Hi

I don't even have snd-ioctl module in my kernel menuconfig as an option. 2.6.12.6 kernel? (done a search for it from my kernels .config file)

And I think that the "amd64 systems" means systems that are fully 64 bit not x86 (or just the kernel?) ??? (there were a line somewhere that said doom3 to be working in amd64 systems without 32 libraries? not that sure about this)

Anyhow having the same problem with nforce4, doom3 no sound, alsa compiled into the kernel and alsa oss emu allso. System is Debian unstable x86. Every other programs sounds are working just fine.

And the sounds worked just fine wit my old hardware nforce2 and nvidias sound driver. And I had the same kind of config in that kernel alsa and alsa oss emulation. Nvidias driver was oss and worked with alsa with emulation? Maybe I'll try to install NVIDIAs driver for sound though it wont propably help but anyhow...

What about that frequency thing might it be that? 44100 kHz, because I think that nforce4 is only 48000 kHz??? Any hints on doing this transformation without lagging the game??? (read somewhere something on slowdown on this kind of a transformation??)

Error:
----------- OSS Sound Initialization -----------
opened sound device '/dev/dsp'
/dev/dsp - bit rate: 16, channels: 2, frequency: 44100
WARNING: mmap 32768 bytes on device /dev/dsp failed: Input/output error

close sound device
WARNING: sound subsystem disabled
-------------------------------------------------------

And Thanks for any help!
