9.2 Pro: how do you get kde or gnome to function

I've done an ftp install of SuSe 9.2 Pro 64. My system now boot successfully into linux, and I am able to log in as root. I am unable to start xstart, kde, or gnome. What do I do??

Start "yast2" as root and configure your graphics card and monitor.

Thanks!!

Ok ... I've been able to configure the monitor and graphics card - and I'm able to launch kdm from the command prompt after logging in as root. I've created a userID and PW (generic), how do I get kde to come up on boot? (9.1 Personal was much more straight forward).

in yast select run level "5" (multiuser + network + xdm) as default run level
(or edit /etc/inittab if you know what you are doing)
