64bit install on HP dx5150

Not sure if this is specific to the HP but I'm trying to install 64 SuSe on an HP dx5150. It's running an AMD Athlon 64 4000+. It installs fine but after the first reboot it boots GRUB but then the screen goes black and the computer locks up.

Going into safe mode shows that it's probing the PCI bus jsut prior to lockup. I've disabled ACPI and APIC in the BIOS and used the no ACPI install option.

Not sure where to go from here. I've tried SuSE 9.3 and 10.0. 32bit installs fine. I've been trying to install a Gentoo amd64 but am having issues building a bootable image. (I've got a possible solution to try from another forum on that one.)

Anyway any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Jerry

What chipset is used in this computer? PCI or PICe?
What type of graphicscard? AGP or PCIe?

I know the graphics are PCIe and I think the chipset is. I'm not sure how to check that. The HP site says ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset.

Thanks,
Jerry

There are some known problems with the installation on PCIe system.
You might want to install a very new distribution or wait until Suse 10.1 is released.

Thanks for your time. I'll watch for 10.1. The 32bit 10.0 installs fine. I've heard that Gentoo amd64 is better at some chipsets so I try that if I get a chance.

But before you begin to install Gentoo, you really should read the install doc.
Installing Gentoo takes a long time (even for experienced Linux users).

god bless Google......
| also have an HP DX5150 and am currently attempting to install Suse10.0, and having the exact same issues as JVWay.....

I have attempted both standard 32 bit and 64-bit version installs.
(Default BIOS settings)
32-bit installed and ran, for about 30 secs then locked/64-bit wouldnt even start install
Disabled APIC in BIOS-
32-bit installs and locks during first boot/64-bit actually starts and finishes install!, but locks during first boot.
Disabled SATA controller in BIOS-
still same.^
Even tried disabling USB controller in BIOS-
still same.^

and as for the ACPI or APIC, I have seen the switch for /no_acpi but I havent seen one for APIC(some confusion here?, i know they are 2 different things-ACPI and APIC)

JVWay--if you have any new info or new discoveries, I'd REALLY appreciate any input..as i have the same machine
