64-bit winmodem

I've managed to install Suse 9.1 Professional on a 64-Bit AMD HP laptop.

The installation went fairly smoothly except for the winmodem. (I know this is a perennial problem.) Research indicates that there is a smartmodem 32-bit driver that should work with this modem. The Suse website indicates that there are currently no 64-bit winmodem drivers.

Is this just a matter of time and patience until 64-bit winmodem drivers get written? Or should I just assume that the modem is a lost cause and purchase a PC Card hardware modem? Is there any reason to believe that a hardware modem would not be recognized?

I am on the same boat. I did not find anything that would make the winmodem work. I installed the 32 bit version on my home PC too and the winmodem driver comes with the installation. So I think you will have to wait or decided to downgrade to 32 bit.

If you decide to buy a PCMCI modem, make sure that it runs under linus. Don't assume anything. I can't help you with a specific model, since I decided that I would not go that route. I will try to wait for now and use windows to check my emails when I'm on the road. I think the 64bit drivers should come out soon. It is just a matter of some C developers getting their hands on a 64bit machine

I have the same issue. Someone here pointed out linextant.com, which sells drivers. I have had some contact with them. They are working on 64 bit modem drivers now.

great news!!! Guess I will wait until they are done.

I know they charge for their drivers but it is a very reasonable fee. Something like 20 dollars.

Crazy idea. Get a normal modem.

There is no such thing as a 64 bit modem and there will not be either. No one is going to make a more than an eight bit chip uart. and the pretence by connexant that they will make a driver for their passive chips is a market ploy to keep using your code for their cheap chips.

Why use your processors code and time to make a cheap peripherial to work for the few pennys difference in the chips.

Spend your $20 on a hardware modem.

Please note I am using the modem as intended and no connection with the so called adsl modem which is a misnomer I believe that device is a TA and not a modem.

What modem do you use right now with 64bit AMD? And do I need a specific driver for it?
