hello,
just to let you know i am today playing halflife2 source(and conterstrike source) on linux...remember, counterstrike source is the biggest online game...EVER. It is one of the only reasons i use dual boot. And now i dont have to.....yipee !
The software i use is called cedega(google search it ) and point to play(the gui for cedega). The install was fairly easy, and nvidia cards MUST be updated in the patch part of yast2.
I am still testing it on my system, and at the moment no problems, and my ping is much lower using suse....any idea`s why this is anyone ?
Hope this helps any serious gamers out there. BTW i use suse 10 eval that is fully updated(as far as i know). cheers, steve.
You pay money for a program that is able to run your games almost as fast as it would in windows.
I don't get it, whats so great about it?
First of all Cedega isn't even released under GPL and its not opensource.
Secondly the common opinion is that TransGaming rob the original wine code, and they now try to benefit from it.
hello,
It is hugely important for all linux distros to move forward with games as well as professional software....the games part is the only barrier to linux thrashing m/soft into a hat. If they, have robbed wine, is that a little like open software.....? BTW some parts of sedega do use wine, but not for css. Any how wats to stop novell from implementing it into their next big upgrade....after all some forms of suse you have to pay for ?
Short version: TransGaming people took the wine code and added directx support and named it wineX (aka cedega) and started to sell "their" product.
I think it would be even important for all game companies to release also a linux version of their windows games. The strategy for game developers is now focusing on other platforms like ps2.
And with those 3rd generation system (X360/PS3/nintendo) things will go even worse.
PCs aren't what they used to be.. Have seen only a few pc-only products in last years.
Distribution: Mac OS X Leopard 10.6.2, Windows 2003 Server/Vista/7/XP/2000/NT/98, Ubuntux64, CentOS4.8/5.4

There's a whole debate about the pros/cons of cedega. One being that it actually holds game manufacturers back from releasing true Linux games. Why bother porting it over to Linux when Cedega can do it? On the other hand, if Cedega makes it BIG, then game companies will realize that there is a market for Linux and will switch over. For the time being, Cedega will do.
hello,
Cedega is a bastard child of wine of that there is no doubt, but at £3 a month i would willingly pay the coders untill the product is perfect. Whats more i would rather pay this pultry some than £350 for win xp along with all the other tat that i need to keep bugs, adware, viruses and unknown crashes/known crashes out of my pc. An "eye candy" approach has helped all of the linux distro`s become an up and coming desktop alternatives to windows, along with stability. The average user can keep all his/her files on an operating system that is generally free of nasties WITHOUT having to reformat, defrag, clean and tidy every(sometimes) week. Now is the next step in the evalution of linux to pry the gamers from win xp for all of the above reasons...and cedega is just ONE of these ways.
I am not an experienced linux hacker, but i know a good thing when i see it....
I have loaded suse(eval)...no problems.
connected my dslr camera, and loaded all the images to the h/drive to be viewed in digicam...no problems
I can view any type of web page(embedded files like flash etc)....no problems
I can play most of my game collection(over from windows)...no real problems
My computer has not become a hive of adware, viruses and the like ready to infect others on the net.
My pc can do more with linux on it than i could ever dream about.
Now tell me if i am wrong...but suse linux is going in the right direction, as is linux in general ?

Indeed novell/suse are taking the linux into next level...
Its easy to use, its safe to use, its has everything you need for a Operating system including some great programs like OpenOffice and gimp.
offtopic:
With Longhorn(vista) hopefully that spyware/virus situation in going to change. Redmond giant finally realized that system doesn“t have to be used with administrator rights ( as we all do with our windows systems ). So you can use Vista only with normal user rights and if it is needed windows ask for the admin password to get higher rights. Atleast this will help in fighting the security issues.
Hmm.. well that sounds like familiar... wait, its just like in linux with root user, isn't it?
If they had done that years ago, the situation would be totally different with all that crap floating around internet.
hello,
there are more issues that the average punter is about to find out with longhorn/whateverwin, and thats the privacy part ie if longhorn dont like it, you aint havin on your system(ill gotten mp3`s) but also files of specialist sources(image files, video`s etc) and i dont mean porn...lol.
Then there is the touchy subject of price....win xp pro is between £150- £350...dippens when and where you got it. So longhorn is going to set you back at least £120 for a starter pack and probably up to £400 for the top show. And yes folks, you saw it here first, that when it does come out within 3 months there will be security issues/spyware/adware/virus threat warnings/system stability issues* delete as appropriate.
You know its true...lol.
cheers, steve.
