No, I didn't make it clear that I only noticed this as it flashed by, and then verified it from dmesg (it is still in dmesg, so that means it came up on the screen last time I booted, right?).
Actually I noticed this on rebooting after the machine had hung on shutdown (because I used my KVM switch before it had finished unmounting the partitions- my bad). So it is just possible that it was due for a fsck on the re-boot but it did not get done what with all the recovering of journal etc. etc. But I don't know any way to read how many times the partition was mounted after the last fsck or how many times it is set to be mounted before fsck is run (though I think I left it at the default).
