10.3 suse -- how long will support last now 11.0 is out

Question here

I've tried some machines with 11.0 -- still not convinced it's 100% stable enough yet --especially with KDE 4.

I like most of the features but there are still (IMO) some glitches that need to be sorted before it can be used as a real workstation OS.

Given maybe a few months down the road with a stable KDE 4.0 / 4.1 / 4.x I can see 11.0 being one of the best distros EVER - especially on a laptop but I get the impression that whilst it's really great for most things it's not quite ready yet for prime time.

So for my real "Working" or "Production" machine I'll stick with 10.3 for the time being.

However anybody know how long support for 10.3 (both 32 qnd 64 bit) (i.e such as updates, bug fixes etc) will last or is 10.3 as of now currently "Frozen".

Cheers

-K

From http://en.opensuse.org/SUSE_Linux_Lifetime, the projected support cycle for openSuSE 10.3 is openSUSE 10.3 - October 31st 2009.

Thanks -- so I've got plenty of time to adjust.

I'll play around with 11.0 on a spare machine until all the "glitches" are solved.

10.3 works great for me --first distro that has seen me become 99.999% Windows Free !!! (although I do run a Windows VM because I need Photoshop -- latest versions won't run on WINE and I need the latest versions since Photoshop 7.0 doesn't support my current cameras).

Cheers

You're not alone

Suse 11.0 is nice, but it is somewhat buggy. The ext3 drive never comes down clean, so Acronis wants to back it up bit by bit. The printing is very faulty and bombs out when you setting up local printers. Yast fails to work in all cases, and the new patterns don't let you just chose KDE3 as a top level entity, you have to know what packages to install. It is very clean other than these things. Unfortunately, I had to go to Ubuntu 8.04 and everything works fine. All the new distros with the upgraded kernel seem to have similar issues. I have tested this on two different pieces of hardware and get the same results.

If openSUSE continues the development cycle established by SuSE, there will be version 11.0; apply major bugfixes to get to 11.1; apply some major and some minor bugfixes to get to 11.2, then apply minor bugfixes to get to 11.3 to complete the cycle. That will be followed by 12.0 to start the next cycle.

If the past can be used as a measure of what to expect in the future, support for 10.3 ends about the time that 11.3 is released.

As for Photoshop, unless there is overriding need to use Photoshop, you should start familiarzing yourself with the Gimp. Most of the things you can do with Photoshop can be done with the Gimp. The largest change will be learning the different terminology. The help files are good, and there is good additional documentation available for download, such as Grokking the Gimp.

Hi there
Great suggestion but the sort of cameras I'm using (Canon 1DS MK3, 1DMk 3 etc -- top of the line expensive PRO stuff) need proper RAW conversion to work and 14 bit processing as well as CYMK stuff for professional printing.

The GIMP is 100% excellent at what it does but as a fully working PRO photographer you really can't live without photoshop.

Photoshop is about the only reason I still have Windows around --although only as a Virtual machine under vmware.

I'd certainly recommend THE GIMP for anybody who doesn't actually need photoshop --it's come a LONG LONG way since its original incarnation.

Cheers
