10.3 alpha 1

hey
i have just applied the delta to my 10.2 GM dvd and am away to install alpha 1, onto a different hd of course, and was wondering if anyone has tried it yet? Is it any good, and are there any noticable improvement over 10.2?

looks like it may be you reporting on 10.3 first

cormack 02-17-2007 12:33 PM

first shot

Rite, well first off the installer, as far as i could see, is the same and works wonderfully as it always has. So no problems there.
Just given Xmoto a test drive, and the graphics on my onboard intel board work great, once again nice job guys.
All my hardware works and internet connection over my network is great aswel, i am writing this on 10.3A1.
The package manager is also good, it seems it 'work' better than it did on 10.2, i never tried 10.1 myself heard bad things..., and using the default inst-sources that the installation offers works and i am able to update.

Its been a few hours now and have just been doing the usual, games, web surfing, and documents, and so far it has been rock steady and i have no complaints. (Edit: This was done using a 32 bit pc, SuSE i386)

If this is anything to go by, then 10.3 could be my main desktop at early beta stage, once more software is optimized for it.

Good job everyone at SuSE.

Hi guys,

I have just dl the file: 10.3A1/openSUSE-10.2GM_10.3Alpha1-DVD-x86_64-delta/openSUSE-10.2GM_10.3Alpha1-DVD-x86_64.delta.iso
When I try to burn image file, K3b says that it seems not to be a usable image???? What is that and what am I doing wrong?

I am running 10.2 version of SUSE and want to upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

Rite well first off, i take it that you are using a 64bit cpu.:)
Development releases are unstable esecially so early on in development, Alpha 1, so i hope you not gonna b to worried by that.

What you have downloaded is a delta iso, around 600 megs i think it is, and all this is, is a .iso file that contains the differences in information between 10.2 GM DVD and 10.3 A1 DVD. In order for this to work you need to have the openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-x86_64.iso aswel as the delta that you have.

You then need to apply the delta iso. Firstly move the two isos into the same directory, and open a konsole;

Code:

cd /the/iso/directory
applydeltaiso openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-x86_64.iso openSUSE-10.2GM_10.3Alpha1-DVD-x86_64.delta.iso openSUSE-10.3-Alpha1-DVD-x86_64.iso

u should just be able to copy and paste that code into your konsole. As long as the user has full write permissions for the location it doesnt need to be as root either.

This can be used for any architecture, just remember to change the x86_64 to ppc or i386. as make sure the names are correct, i used the default ones that SuSE provides when downloading.
And the applydeltaiso command works such as 'applydeltaiso old.iso delta.iso new.iso'

If you no longer have the 10.2 GM DVD you can download it again, or better yet, to save server bandwidth, get the torrent, or just rip your own 10.2 dvd.

Thanks Ryan

is there a way i can create a delta ISO without having a distribution on my current computer?
The situation is as follows: i have SUSE 10.2 x64 at home (installed from 10.2 DVD) but i don't have internet connection available, but: i have internet connection at my workplace - but there's no option of setting up SUSE there.
Q: Is there a way i can use some utility to create 10.3 delta ISO at my windows workplace having only DVD with 10.2 distribution inserted in the drive? i mean is there some utility for that? or i need to have suse installed on the PC i'm creating iso at?

Hey, there are ways yeh, but i wouldnt imagine it would be easy. Could you just not dl the delta at your work, then put it on a cd or memory stick and take it home?

If not then you will need to make an iso of the dvd, save it on your work pc, download the delta iso, and use this windows .exe installer
http://gifuyana.com/wapplydeltaiso/wapplydeltaiso.html
And that should hopefully make the new dvd for you.

Although i have never used that, or had any experience with having to do such a thing on windows. There is also a wiki at www.opensuse.org.

Wifi problem with opensuse 10.3

In OpenSuse 10.2, I can get my Linksys WUSB54g (v4) wifi adapter to work if I rmmod the default rt2500usb driver that installs automatically, then modprobe the serialmonkey rt2570 module. It works fine except that I can't get wpa-psk to work and have to make do with wep (even though the module is supposed to support wpa).

In 10.3, this procedure doesn't work. I don't know if it is the kernel, or the module or kinternet which is at fault.

rt2570 comes with the rausb0 interface whereas rt2500usb insists on giving me wlan (which I can't get to work). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi guys,

Yesterday I DL both DVDs, SuSE 10.3 A1 SOURCES (4,4GB) and the system 10.3 A1 (3.5GB) I install (clean install) it on my comp x86_64, and must say that the installation went fine. I just want to know what to do with the sources DVD? Can I use it as a source to install programs or what??? From the first look the fonts are somewhat different from the fonts I have had on 10.2.But that I will try to change.
There are some minor things to do (same as were on 10.2 from the beginning), CUPS drivers for EPSON laser printer, saa5xx drivers, I have to install packman and guru repos etc.

Have to find out what and how to apply that SOURCE DVD.

wirefr@me 02-21-2007 01:01 AM

Cormack - thanks a lot! Will try that :study: :)

riba43 02-21-2007 05:58 AM

There are no repos (packman, guru etc) so DVDs are not playing among other things. A lot of packages can not be installed. Smart channels ?? I do not know but I think there are none yet?!

dth1 02-21-2007 11:10 AM

I would guess that you would be safe to use the rpm's from packman for 10.3

riba43 02-21-2007 12:45 PM

I apologies, but where to find them??
