:0 Display in loop then terminated unexpectedly

ARGH.

I dont know what I installed but I restarted my computer and the X server wouldn't come up. I had compiz and XGL up so I disable XGL and did
'init 3'
then the display just looped showing the starting screen and then dieing, and it just looped over that sequence again and again till it gave up. What should I do. Any ideas?

/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows a lot of stuff about /usr/share/fonts/xxxx not existing. Is that all it is?

Cheers,

Paul
