Ditto here. It seems that Zen works well now. I have all updates complete.

FYI: I took your advice and installed Ubuntu over my SuSE 10.1. So, not as much eye candy, not as much bleeding edge stuff...but, Ubuntu is far more stable and usable than the fussy SuSE 10.1. It was so bad I couldn't even use the PC (check here).

Anyway, just some words of advice to newbies who take the OpenSuSE 10.x dive.

If you would have followed the instructions to the letter as it was given to you, then your problem could have been solved in a short time.
But as long as you are happy with Ubuntu then that's all that counts.

I DID follow the instructions. Besides, have you ever experienced that exact error? Did you get the exact same output that I got? Obviously the thread starter had a seemingly-related, but in the end, different problem. Oldcpu provided some insight, but his advice simply did not work in the end. It seemed as though once I rebooted after a clean install, I would no longer see the GUI.

Besides, now that I am running Ubuntu, I have gotten even my Palm device to work, which, for the life of me, I could not configure correctly on SuSE, even though I spent hours trying to figure it out.

Is it wrong to assume that a mainstream distribution should not require a PHd in order to get it to simply work?

i just use smart, works all the time though is ridiculously slow to refresh the sources

im just about to build a new comp anf i might try FC5 for a bit and wait till 10.2 is a late beta at least before going back to suse (may still keep it on my old machine, may not)

I use smart and apt4suse. Smart works like charm . It is fast, updates and upgrades are as fast as apt. I have no complaints at all. Zen is not working at all. Sometimes I make it run but only for a short time. Now I do not bother.

TZRick -- after years of happy SuSE use and a week of SuSE 10.1 hell I changed to Ubuntu 6.06 and just ran a successful update to the 6.10 beta. I for one am sticking with my new home Ubuntu.

Why are you guys coming to the SuSE threats telling everyone that they are happy with another Distribution?
This isn't the area where you can advertise for other Distributions.
Go to the Ubuntu Forum.
Leave the bitching to us SuSE users that are using it and are prepared to keep working on it despite the problems we might find.
Or to get help to solve issues that we have with our Distribution.

If I knew what I know now, I would not have even considered SuSE. So, I am simply sharing my experience. I mean, really. Is it wrong to point out the problems I have had with SuSE, in the hope that others may avoid the same pitfalls? Besides, why would people who frequent SuSE forums want to see the same complaints by newbies each and every time? Less of those posts would leave more room for the experts to work on truly new issues.

Sharing everyones experiences is how we learn from each other. Internet capacity has plenty of room for all users. When it comes to analyzing a problem, more data points help pinpoint the real source and extent of a the problem. Everyone here was a newbie once.
