YaST2 takes ages to load
 

I run openSUSE 10.2 with the GNOME desktop. It is relatively fast. However, when I, 1) click "install software, 2) enter the root password, it takes a very long time to load YaST2. This normal?

Yeah. YAST is pretty slow on my system too. It's nothing on your end, I don't think. It's the time it takes for YAST to reload and refresh the repos that causes the slowdown.

Have you tried yast2 in KDE?

my yast2 is fast... :)

It takes about 5 minutes on my system and 300 MB of memory, since I have lots of repositories configured and it checks all of them. It takes very long to update them if the internet connection is busy.

WOW! That is a long time. I complain about my slow YAST, and it only takes about a minute. ;)

I used to have 256mb ram in my pc and any app., esp yast, amarok and openoffice used to take ages to load. Now after having upgraded to 1gb r.a.m., yast opens up as fast as any other application in any other o.s.(though starting of yast modules may take 1 or 2 seconds.
I have difficulty only in moving around windows, scrolling in most applications and movies don't play smoothly.

I have 1 GB RAM on a P4 2.4 GHz computer and 20 repositories configured, some of which are very slow (the opensuse.org ones).

Well...

Probably what makes my yast2 fast is because I don't setup any repositories...hehe...only the Install DVD.

I don't have permanent internet connection. :mad:

I think mine takes about 30 minutes to load.

In my case Yast is slow to load, but is TERRIBLY slow when working, it took one hour to download and install 25MB (15 of which from the CD). I have the impression it is getting worse and worse. For the rest, the system works well, is there any chance someone takes a serious look into this issue? I installed Ubuntu to a couple of persons and their package manager is amazingly fast...

For those in the know a choice would be nice when opening yast for any purpose.

Dont go straight into loading and parsing files .
First give a summary of what this particular Yast does and ask me if I want to go do it?

Before downloading anything!

And though Ubuntu package manager is faster, I have also observed this, Yast is better and more efficient in package management. Nearly all- at least 99% of their packages, either from dvd or their official site( i have not tried guru/ packman as yet) can be installed at a time without dependency conflicts. From the 1% exceptions which cannot be installed simultaneously includes two kernels at a time, which is logically, too senseless. In ubuntu, using synaptic, even packages RECOMMENDED BY THEIR SITES DON'T INSTALL PROPERLY.
Thus if you are in upto 512 or 786M RAM system, u can forgive for the time it takes for yast to load, as your system at other times will be safe and sound and at your command.:tisk: And If you have 1G RAM you should not worry at all.:)
And one more tip: If you are well familiar with yast gui, you can start it very well in some console(not konsole, as memory constraints reach near to g.u.i.), as the interface is similar to the gui, only that its all blue and you have to use tab repeatedly. Here, it is very fast.

I say fast/slow based on my experience with the same OS which has been run on 1G RAM(as of now) and on 256M RAM PC( just even a month back before i upgraded the PC).

Also, if you have < / = 512M RAM, stop karamba and the like, some of the themes of which are cpu as well as RAM intensive.;) :Pengy:

Thanks, I'll try to see if starting Yast from console makes it work faster.
