yast won't show patches to download

Hello fellow users. Last week, after I downloaded the security patches and rebooted, the kde did not work. I found out that my root filesystem became corrupted and decided to reinstall suse to get rid of all the baggage that I added to it. I think the problem is from the kde security update that screwed up the system. Anyways, at the suse installation screen, I told it to leave the home partition alone and just reformat the root partition as I have things in home partition I don't want to part. Everything went fine. I added things to the installation source just like before and installed things to have things where It was before. My only problem is that it seems I can't download any security patches from yast online update. It does load all the installation source but yast shows that I don't have any patches to download. It has been a week and I still have the original kernel and firefox and other things from the original suse 10.2 cds. I thought the problem might be from not reinstalling the home partition and just the root partition. I am not sure though. I hope I made sense about this whole thing. Thanks for helping

It sounds like you don't have the repo's set up. I use smart though for installing and updating and have never had any problems see below for the how to

This was the last reason I needed to abandon SuSE (which I used since 1998) a few weeks ago. The YaST and ZEN stuff was just too much broken.

On the more positive side: there's a program "opensuseupdater" which does a much better job and I think that it's installed by default but shown nowhere. You have to start it from the CLI (naturally after you registered from within YaST or installed the repositories manually). Get rid of everything which starts with ZEN before you start opensuseupdater.
