will a celeron(R) 2.40 Ghz processor support SUSE/Novel

I work as a computer tech, and were getting a lot of new customers wanting older computers to run linux on. The problem, as I see it, is I don't know much about Linux except it works well. I really need to find out which processors will work for which Linux systems. We have people looking to us for answers we can not provide yet. I'm asking for a bit of help in giving these customers the right computer for what they have in mind.

If I recommend a computer that is to old for a system that is to advanced Linux may loose a person who could benefit. I need the information. Or where I can get this information.

Can a celeron(R) 2.40 Ghz processor support SUSE 11.2

I think you're asking the wrong question. It's not can it support (your favourite distribution here), but can it run (your desired application suite here) reasonably with (number of users here) logged on, or queries per minute, emails per hour, etc. etc.

In general, GUIs take a lot of oomph (technical term) will run slower on older machines. In text mode, you can still do a lot of useful things with very old hardware. (Like a Pentium II 500MHz)

You could certainly get some ok results from a Celeron 2.4 workstation with a decent amount of memory.
