If you're comfortable compiling Perl from the sources, you should be able to put any version on 11.1 that will compile under the C compiler installed on the system. The latest Perl is 5.20.1. I note on the Perl web site that there is a toolkit that you
may need to use to compile Perl from the source code. This is something new since I last compiled Perl (which was back in the Bronze Age on an older version of a commercial UNIX that didn't yet ship with Perl) so I'm not sure how using that will deviate from the traditional "./configure; make; make install" process. (Provided that your even comfortable with
that.)
It might be worth tracking down and looking at the change history for the releases that came after 5.10. Depending on what find, you may decide that it's not really necessary to move to a newer version. It depends on whether you're going to use the system in an environment where you could get bitten by any security problems addressed by a post 5.10 version of Perl. (There are probably more security problems elsewhere in 11.1 that would be at least as, if not more, worrisome.)
Good luck...
