water effect compiz

Hi,
I am using Suse 11 64 bit and I am trying to set up the Compbiz water effects.Other compbiz features work, such as the rotating cube, but when I click enable water effects, nothing happens. I have set the initiate keys to <super>w. Nothing happens when I do this. Is there some other settings that must be enabled/disabled? I am using KDE. Should I be on Gnome?
I am running a laptop with AMD Athlon 2 X2 processor and a Mobility Radeon HD4250 graphics card, so I assume that my system sgould be capable of running it.
Any suggestions?

Tim

What is the output of 'ps ax | grep compiz'? Have you tried using the default settings for the water effect?

Hi, This is the output.

Quote:
tim@linux-oxgy:~> ps ax | grep compiz
8668 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep compiz
tim@linux-oxgy:~>
Does this help?

Thanks for the reply,
Tim

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I had tried resetting defaults. ctrl<super> initiates water effect. When I use this combo, the cursor on the screen gets surrounded by stars, obviously to help the user locate it.Ant custom setting fails to work.

Code:
tim@linux-oxgy:~> ps ax | grep compiz

tim@linux-oxgy:~>
Well, according to that, you're not even running compiz. How did you (try to) start compiz?

Hi, I tried to set the effects in CompizConfig Settings Manager.
When I type compiz in a terminal window I get the message:
Quote:
tim@linux-oxgy:~> compiz
compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
tim@linux-oxgy:~>
Thanks,
Tim

Ah, I have just had a look at Default Applications in System Settings and discovered that KDE is the window manager. I changed this to Compiz. However, when I do this, the task bar at the bottom of the screen disappears and I have to let Compiz timeout and convert to the original settings. Any ideas? Thanks for all the help. It is appreciated!

Thanks,
Tim

Hmmm, try running 'compiz-manager &' in a terminal (it might require installing compiz-manager first, but I think that's available as a package for opensuse).

Show us the output of that command.

When I type this command, the bottom task bar immediately disappears and the console screen turns green - merging to orange. The text can no longer be read. I must revert to KDE Window management to correct the error. Before the crash happens, all I can read is:

Xgl not present

although there is other text present.

Does this help?

What you're describing really sounds like a driver issue, though compiz-manager usually detects if a driver is not installed properly and will refuse to start. Can you pastebin your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and give us the link to it?

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the reply. I did a bit of research and found that my driver sometimes misbehaves with Suse. I ended up doing a fresh install using Fedora 14 and got everything running well, apart from one small glitch with animated skydome effects. Thanks again for all your help :-)
