VMWare bash: /usr/bin/vmware: No such file or directory

I am running Suse 10, KDE 3.4.2.

I had a problem installing VMware for some time now but today it finally installed properly. (After a Kernel update.) I was finally able to pass the "What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?" [/usr/src/linux/include] section.

I think I've read every documentation regarding VMware and I wasn't able to find any listing of my current issue.

It states me run the command:

You can now run VMware Workstation by invoking the following command:
"/usr/bin/vmware"

When I run this command I get:

chaz@linux:~> /usr/bin/vmware
bash: /usr/bin/vmware: No such file or directory

I also open up VMware Player by going to "System/More Programs" (As requested by documentation) but when I do it asks me to find this particular file. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

The whole basis of me wanting to run VmWare is to run a particular program in Linux that can only be used in Windows. This is a test to try and get away from Windows altogether.

Thanks for any asisstance you can provide.

On my machine, the vmware binaries seem to be located in /usr/lib/vmware/bin/. If you want that binary in /usr/bin, you should run:
Code:
ln -s /usr/bin/vmware /usr/lib/vmware/bin/(vmplayer or whatever)

my whereis vmware comes up as:

vmware: /etc/vmware /usr/lib/vmware

However, VMplayer is in /usr/bin.
All you need to do to get vmware going is type "vmplayer" from a konsole (that is if you're using vmplayer, not vmworkstation)
Links in "bin" folders can be executed in any path, assuming the bin folder is accessible (depends on your user and group settings).

If your System/More Programs isnt working, I suspect there's a problem.

When you install VMPlayer you install the RPM, then do the configure command for it, then it'll launch.

I must be doing something wrong or I'm just not "getting it."

If I run /usr/bin/vmplayer OR "vmware" (from Konsole)I get a dialogue box starting at my "Home" folder with an option to open Virtual Machines. (.vmx) I don't have any .vmx files. All I can do is selct cancel and, both boxes disappear.

I do see the player behind this box but I don't know what to select to open it by itself.

I'm sure I'm doing something stupid but I am unable to figure it out. I've checked all documentation but nothing that I've read explains what to do at this point.

Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong? Thank you in advance.

Well with VMPlayer there are a few things you should know.

Every virtual machine needs a VMDK file and a VMX file. THe VMX file contains most of the configuration settings for that specific VM you're running. The VMDK file is the harddrive file that contains all your data (basically the virtual hard drive). WHen you launch VMPlayer you choose the VMX file which tells it what to do and where the VMDK file is.
I make a folder for each VM i have. 1 for WinXP, 1 for Win98, 1 for Ubuntu, etc.
The VMX files do vary by VM and have different settings depending upon the OS you install on the VM.

You can download qemu-img (part of qemu) to make a vmdk file any size. THen you just need to learn about VMX files and how they're organized. There's lots of information about them on google if you just search for "VMX file". Then you just basically launch your VMX file to your blank hard disk and install your OS like you would on a brand new computer.

Hope this helps!
