Tried your last suggestions to no avail. Found a file /etc/hotplug/usb.rc. it says it is invoked via /etc/init.d/hotplug. There is no such file in the init.d folder. Could this be the problem? Also noticed in /etc/hotplug/blacklist that "usbcore" entry is blacklisted. I commented it out, rebooted, nothing. I have also comed through every file in Yast and there is nothing more to do with hotplug or usb to load into the kernel. Also went into the runlevel editor in yast. Everything looked ok except that "autofs" was not enabled. When I tried to enable got a message "program is not configured". This is now week two on this most basic issue. Windows is looking like a good deal at $200.00. I have spent at least 25 hours on SUSE 10 so far. At $20.00 per hour I am $300.00 behind the 8 ball. Maybe Gates is correct. The total cost of ownership is what counts.
Have just checked "/etc/sysconfig editor", and find under storage that entries "HOTPLUG_MOUNT_FSTAB" and "HOTPLUG_MOUNT_FILESYSTEMS" are both set to "yes" What now?
That would have been quite helpful for us to know, actually. It is a KDE package, thus using gnome is quite different. SuSE's main package is KDE, it is the default and what they recommend, which is why unless otherwise stated, we are going to think you are doing things the normal way.
Okay...
There is probably gnome software which does just the same thing, however I am unawares as to what it may be.
Once again it matters not what environment you use, because this applet is part of SuSE system.
In Gnome you go almost the same way;
Applications=>System=>Desktop Applet=>SuSEPlugger
and I can make another shot but I thought you can figure this time yourself
Just saw yur reply SlackerLX before I logged off. When I go to Applications=>System=> desktop applet=> I can see a Susewatcher, not Suseplugger. Susewatcher appears only to be an applet for getting updates from the internet, not a hotplug notification. No sign of Suseplugger any where.
For goodness sake, man!
open terminal and type. It can't be any simplier than that. This the clear product of long microsoft usage. Only for that I want to support virus makers. Microsoft has been successful in producing the masses of clickable dummies and helping them by creating even more idiotic books "for dummies". Just open terminal and type the command you need to run. Don't be afraid of using terminal. It can help you much more than gui
Open terminal and type what? I tried typing your string but nothing happened. I have tried many a time to use the terminal, but remember Microsoft was successful because they got away from the copmmand line so that dummies could get some use out of computers. I never learned dos and don't want to work with command lines because I am not a techie. I just want to get some work done. Sorry to bother you with my ignorance. If any one else can help please do so, otherwise I am lost. If I can't work in the GUI it is goodbye SuSE.
In the console you can display commands hithing two times the TAB button, if you not write nothing, it will display all the accesible commands, if you write for example "suse" and the hit 2 times TAB, you will get the list of commands that start with "suse" , for example my output is
Gnome applets are installed, and when I type suseplugger at the console prompt nothing happens, so I think we can assume that suseplugger is not loaded. I am going to cut my losses and re-install with the KDE interface and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions.
No need to reinstall. In software management go to filter Selections and mark "KDE Desktop" and If you have space "All of KDE" It will install full KDE environment
- I cannot find the menu item "Menu=>System=>Desktop Applet=>SUSEPlugger" that SlackerLX suggested.
- I used YAST to sear for plug or hotplug (as RedShirt) suggested. It seems that I have all the relevant packages.
- I searched in my KMenu for 'plug' but couldn't find anything.
The only thing that remains is that my kernel is 2.6.13 and I need to upgrade it.
I have re-installed Suse 10.0 and downloaded all updates from the internet. Am now using KDE desktop. Still no SUSUPlugger on the KDE menu, but as with gnome there is a SUSEwatcher applet. When I type Suseplugger at the promptin terminal there is no response. As before the USB controller is detected, but none of my USB peripherals. Definitely seems to be a problem with hotplug on my system, and also I see on that of trident above. Will be away for a few days, and will check in on my return to see if anyone knows anything. I verified the media before I installed, and the installation was flawless. Machine is a HP Visualize workstation, with dual Pentium 111 and SCSI hard drive.
