Question usb mass storage not recognized


Hi All,

I'm another newbie just out with XP crap trying to install USB mass storage
(external hard disk). I just couldn't figure out how it's done. After studying a number of threads. I need a detailed reply with necessary commands to need to done so as to make start working.

I felt the output of dmesg command would be of help.

You missed showing anything about the USB device, try looking again this time maybe the /var/log/messages file. You might find something useful, for example;

I managed to get my laptop (Ubuntu 7.10) to notice my external usb hdd only after I had the usb cable connected while I pulled out and then reinserted the powerplug of the hdd (my usb hdd doesn't have a powerbutton).

With the hdd power on, the computer refused to take any notice when I connected the usb cable... My desktop (also ubuntu 7.10), however, did recognize the usb hdd while the usb hdd was powered up and I connected the usb cable...
