Question Upgraded to SuSe 10, usb cable modem problem

Hello people,

I currently use Suse 9.3 professional, but I want to upgrade to SuSe 10.0.

So far, I have tried it twice but I have had the same problem each time I upgrade, namely that Yast recognises and configures my cable modem correctly with DHCP, but when I try to do an online update or try to access the internet I get an error basically saying the USB port is not ready or cannot reach host etc..

I have had to revert back to suse 9.3 on both occasions just so I can restore my internet access, my cable modem worked fine under that version.

I find this infuriating, as I really want to run the latest version of suse, but I cant do without internet access!!

I really hope someone could shed some light onto how I may be able to solve this problem.

best regards,
Gary

What is the make and model of your cable modem? Is it NTL?, I never got the USB cable to work, I just use the ethernet port - far easier, a bit quicker and more stable.

Well, both distro's identify my cable modem as a "Askey cable modem", but the make of the modem is actually a Webstar 100, made by scientific atlanta.

Of course, it could just be that Askey make the modem for Scientific Atlanta.

Thing is, everything works fine under 9.3, but not under SuSe 10. Weird.

Thanks for replying, BTW

Gary

Very odd. Maybe they removed some driver or support when they brought out the newer system. Seriously though, if you do have access to an ethernet port on the modem (or can put it through a hub) I would use it - it makes setting it all up so much easier.

Yes, I agree, i suspect that something has been removed.

The home network is on the way (all wireless, I hope, the missus hates cables, lol), I've got three PCs and this lap top that I am typing this on to connect up.

I see your from kent, as am I, you wouldn't happen to know of any good LUGs in the local area?

Also, thanks for the link to the "rute users" book, I have been after that for some time.

cheers,

Gary

The nearest LUG to me (North Kent) is in Bromley. There is also one in Orpington - beyond that, I don't know.

I have a cable modem hooked up to a wireless (Netgear router) and 2 laptops wirelessly connected, a PDA wirelessly connected and a pc wiredly connected! Good luck with your set up.

As I say, if your modem has an ethernet port on the back of it (possibly under a label which says "do not remove" ) use that, far far less hassle.
