Upgrade SuSE 9.3 32 bit to 64 bit

Is it possible to upgrade a working SuSE 9.3 Pro 32 bit installation to 64 bit via YaST or apt4suse?

Is it simply a matter of adding the repositories to apt sources.list or YaST directories?

Or, do I have to make a clean install?

You should be able to upgrade using the YaST System Update tool, and could do that by adding the appropriate repositories as sources or from CD / DVD. An Update is sometimes problematic though, and a clean install is less likely to cause problems.

It's worth a try I suppose, but going from 32 bit to 64 bit is going to replace just about everything anyways.

I'd go for the clean install.

Yah. After trying to upgrade 8.3 to 9.3 and getting a thourghly messed up system (major changes between version, I guess), I copied /home, /root, /boot, and /etc (for comparison and copy-back if possible), I did a fresh install of 9.3 and got a clean system. Copied back /home, /root, and a few customised configs from /etc. /boot was completely changed because of kernel versions, etc.

Guess I'll just bite the bullet and do a clean install. A recent full backup is waiting in the wings, just in case.

Thanks for your replies.
