Upgrade SuSE 9.3 32 bit to 64 bit
Is it possible to upgrade a working SuSE 9.3 Pro 32 bit installation to 64 bit via YaST or apt4suse?
Is it simply a matter of adding the repositories to apt sources.list or YaST directories? Or, do I have to make a clean install? |
You should be able to upgrade using the YaST System Update tool, and could do that by adding the appropriate repositories as sources or from CD / DVD. An Update is sometimes problematic though, and a clean install is less likely to cause problems.

It's worth a try I suppose, but going from 32 bit to 64 bit is going to replace just about everything anyways.
I'd go for the clean install. |
Yah. After trying to upgrade 8.3 to 9.3 and getting a thourghly messed up system (major changes between version, I guess), I copied /home, /root, /boot, and /etc (for comparison and copy-back if possible), I did a fresh install of 9.3 and got a clean system. Copied back /home, /root, and a few customised configs from /etc. /boot was completely changed because of kernel versions, etc.
Guess I'll just bite the bullet and do a clean install. A recent full backup is waiting in the wings, just in case. Thanks for your replies. |
