Upgrade or fresh install?

I have been running a SuSe 8.0 machine successfully for two years without any glitches. I want to upgrade to a newer version of the distribution. Updates for 8.0 are no longer available. Only 8.1 is available. I would like to upgrade my current system because it has been so incredibly reliable and I don't want to lose my current setup. Can anyone point me to a good location to learn about upgrading or suggest what I should do in this situation for a newer distribution? SuSe has been a great platform but others are suggesting that I go to gentoo. Are there precautions that I should take if I should go for a fresh install? The hardware that I have is older. Should I just leave what I have because of the reliabilty?

Why fix it if its not broken? lol. I am always the one to go with a fresh install over an "upgrade". I'm not sure of the whole process under linux and if you can get the same problems that you do with any version of windows, but old habits die hard. Anyways, thats my opinion
