Update Killed KDE on OpenSUSE 10.3

Hi all,

I stupidly installed a patch yesterday without checking the full details, and I rebooted the system.

After reboot, I couldn't access it remotely.

I plugged in monitor and saw filesystem errors and it wasn't booting.
I got past those errors with
Code:

fsck -y
The system now boots.

But unfortunately KDE is broken.

It says,
Quote:

Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.
However I can log in via failsafe so I tried removing the contents of /tmp/ but that didn't help.

Does anyone know how I can fix my broken KDE?

I can log in with failsafe but it gives this after login

Code:

/usr/bin/manpath: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct
Then this is the output I get when I type KDE

Code:

user2:~ # kde
/usr/bin/kde: line 270: xsetroot: command not found
startkde: Starting up...
/usr/bin/kde: line 354: xprop: command not found

Probably the fastest route is to reinstall either all or all your KDE-related packages (and others that might be involved). If it was just KDE settings trouble, you could just remove any .kde and/or .qt directories from your home directory (or try creating a new user and see how it works on that), but in this case I suppose it's not that easy -- it's not necessarily just KDE that's doing odd things. And if reinstalling KDE packages doesn't help and you don't want to spend a lot of time hunting down the reason, take backups of your precious data and reinstall the system. Typically you shouldn't need to do that, but on the other hand, it's probably faster and cleaner than tweaking and trying out things if you don't know what exactly you're looking for.

So take backups, your home directory and the "hidden" directories in it, do a reinstall (should take about one hour nowadays or less) and push the data back.

Hi like you suggested I removed the .kde and .qt directories from my home folder but I still can't log in (with kde).

I forgot to mention, it's a web server and apache/php/mysql are still running fine - just seems to be the window manager.

Can I reinstall/refresh KDE from command line? Some kind of repair on it...

I spent so many hours tweaking this box the thought of reinstalling it all makes me want to spew!

I keep CloneZilla disc-images, but my most recent one isn't as close as I'd like!

I should have setup a schedule!!

So how can I refresh KDE packages from the command?

Thanks

update killed kde on opensuse 10.3

Being in the command line it is possible to start yast2
So it might be possible to install kde again
Maybe it worth to try it

all the best

If you're using suser-jengelh packages most probably it's their fault.
I had the same thing. After reinstalling the whole system without that repo I got KDE working again.

I updated all the kde packages but it's still dead.

Yep i'm using the suser-j.engelh packages.

Oh well

Can anyone recommend the safest repos to use with 10.3?

Time to restore my discs with CloneZilla..
