I recently upgraded to KDE 3.4. After I rebooted my machine, I get the message "unable to start kstartupconfig. Check your installation.". I am running SuSE 9.2.
Any ideas how to fix this? If you are suggesting a reinstall, please let me know how I can do this from safe mode.

Another question, any idea when 9.3 will be available for FTP install?

I had the same problem after installing KDE 3.4 on SuSE 9.1. I solved the problem by choosing another session type from the "Menu" (WindowMaker, I think.) It also failed, but I was able to choose an "alternate window manager" or something like that. I did so and was able to get a shell. (You may be able to get a shell by choosing Fail Safe---I didn't get to that point.) I noticed that I had some ownership problems in my home directory. I guess some of the users/groups got screwed up during the upgrade. Anyway, I used: chmod -R hhlost:users /home/hhlost and all was fixed.

As someone pointed out in the thread mentioned in the post above, it should be

chown -R username:users /home/username

not chmod

Any help with pcLos? The chown command does not work.

The home directory is made with pam
/etc/pam.d

edit common-session
add session required pam_mkhomedir.so umask=0022 skel=/etc/skel

the error should be resolved
