I am using suse 10.0 32 bit and get the following: 'there is no input plugin abailable to handle 'dvd '/'. Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist.' I checked the yast packages and could not find a reference to libdvdcss or anything close to that spelling. I am not sure what input plugin is missing. I have tried xine, kaffeine and real player. I just installed mplayer with no results. I also added Packman and Guru depositories to the yast software management.
libdvdcss is required to play encrypted DVD's (many movie DVD's). It is not included in the software repositories for legal reasons. Have a look at http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=122 for instruction how to download and install it. Also, SUSE versions of xine/kaffeine and mplayer may not work. Deinstall them and use versions from packman.
I have never tried to uninstall any packages before. In yast, if I click on the icon next to the package name and toggle the icon to uninstall and accept it, then the package will be uninstalled? And, to use only packman to grab the proper package, I should disable the other file sources, (i.e. installation cd, guru, ect.?). I noticed after installing libdvdcss2 rpm, a yellow padlock icon next to the listing libdvdcss2 in yast. Can libdvdcss2 be deleted from my system if I chose or is it locked in some way?
You don't have to disable the other sources, you can just move packman to the top of the list.
With the padlock, the package will not be automatically updated in the future. If you want to update the package later you need to get rid of the padlock (clicking on it again).
I updated kaffeine using packman as my source. The dvd loaded and the intro played using kaffeine, however, I was unable to play the main movie (it stopped, said either could not find media or did not have rights to play it). What problems should I look for?
I have not heard of smart. Is this a general distribution Linux or Suse utility?
I have xine installed, but it is unable to play any dvd media. It states a plugin is missing, but does not say which one. I have libdvdcss installed as well. Is there a depository for xine plugins?
Check if your distro will allow you to install Smart from its own media, that way all necessary channels will be included upon install.
Smart should work with other distros if you have the right channels and repository information.
As to XINE not working, you need to update it from the NON-Proprietary or OSS version to a version that will allow you to play dvds. Using the Update All feature of smart will fix it.
