Touchpad Works But Mouse Fails

The SUSE 10.1 install was perfect however.....
The mouse that was attached during the install doesn't
work under GNOME. It was probed and an entry was created in xorg.conf This is a 2 button PS/2 mouse(8 pin). The synaptics touchpad is always working on this Compaq 1830 Laptop.
Under Suse, shouldn't both devices work concurrently ?
A diagnostic approach will be appreciated as well as a working xorg.conf script would also be appreciated.
Sax2 thinks the mouse is there but does not respond during the test. Strangely the mouse screen test responds to the synaptic inputs!
Specifically,
1. Exactly how can i assure the kernel is detecting the mouse ?
2. How do i determine that X11 sees the mouse ?
3. How do i determine that Gnome sees the mouse ?
TIA
