tainted kernel!?

right, i was trying to install a rpm package and i got some compatibility warnings i presumed they were the older version and told it to uninstall it and i continued. I then realised what it was uninstalling and aborted the install, it was uninstalling lots of essential filed including the kdebase package. I reinstalled the kde package and all the other files it needed and everything worked fine. but when i boot up i am greeted by a gray login screen with an xconsole box in the corner telling me about kernel problems with the cd drives and how the kernel is tainted by the nvidia drivers and my adsl modem. I then reinstalled the kernel and then my modem and nvidia driver but i still get the same problem, i cannot login through the grey login screen (only as root it works) and i have to go into the command line and change to init 3 and start x through that. since i reinstalled the kernel i dont think its to do with that but maybe a important package which is missing. thanks.

It sounds like you are missing kdm (or gdm or whatever login screen you actually use).

The messages about the “tainted kernel” are benign; they are just warning you that the driver software you are using is not released under the GPL. (See www.fsf.org)

The main login managers are xdm, kdm and gdm. You should find documentation for configuring these from the websites for X11, KDE and GNOME, respectively.
