System services return unspecified error in yast2

Hi

I am running an old Suse 10.2
Suddenly I get messages like:

/etc/init.d/vsftpd stop returned 1 (unspecified error):

for ANY service that I trying to enable or disable in yast2,

while

service vsftpd stop
Shutting down vsftpd done

runs fine from the prompt.

- both as root.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Thanks Wolfgang

As root try running '/bin/bash -vx /etc/init.d/vsftpd stop 2>&1 | tee /tmp/svc.log'. This will run the init script in debug mode after which you can 'less /tmp/svc.log' for any clues. Also please update to a maintained and supported version of your chosen Linux distribution ASAP. Running a deprecated version is bad in many ways and there are no valid or compelling reasons to keep running it.
