System Hangs, no badblocks

Ok, when transacting with the harddisk in linux (suse 9.2 on amd64 with 64bit rpms), the system likes to hang randomly.
Ive reinstalled twice.
Filesystems are ext3 and reiserfs. All filesystems have been check and checked again for badblocks. None found.

The harddisk is on SATA as /dev/sda

Syslog messages? I know there should be some in /var/log, but where from there? None such issues in knoppix 3.7.

I also dont know how to check for kernel pannics so there might be some but I doubt it.

TX

UPDATE:

It seems that it mostly happens with the network traffic. When traffic is happening on any of the 2 NIC (and I have tried both), it tends to freeeeze.
Chipset is NFORCE4.
I have loaded the NFORCE4 network drivers.

i seem to have the same problem on my amd64. i have tried ubuntu and suse. both 64-bit and 32-bit. they both hang randomly. i run nforce3 chipset. does it have anything to do with network card or just chipset?

i run 64-bit gentoo for a while and it was running fine. but i want to run ubuntu or suse instead. help me out here.

by random hangs i mean that it just stops responding. from what i have noticed it hangs when i am put load on hard drive. such as, last time ubuntu hung was when i was downloading something. and before that it hung when i was copying a large iso fine on my hard drive.

so what do you guys think?

thanks. my first post on linuxquestions.com

In gentoo, i run 2004.3 64bit natively. No hangups, no straw, nothing.
With suse this aint the case.
Thus,I'll check with the new suse 9.3 wheather this has been resolved, though I doubt it.

I have a very strong feeling towards the network being the problem. Currently I use forcedeth as the network driver, NOT nvidia's drivers.
Wintos only detects one NIC, though both works fine in gentoo with modules: sk98lin and forcedeth.

The problem lies with it hanging.
This is also not n KDE/X problem because I tried uploading stuff via sftp and it also happened as soon as the transfer started.

Ideas anyone?

As I have gentoo running now, I cant install suse.
Please check "dmesg" for me and "grep" if needed for eth0 or something like this:
dmesg <ENTER>
****OUTPUT****
f
ds
ds
fdsf
dsfs
dfds eth0
fs
****OUTPUT END****
dmesg | grep eth0 <ENTER>

****OUTPUT****
dfds eth0
****OUTPUT END****

then paste the stuff here:

from what i have read so far, this seems like a nforce chipset problem with APIC. some people got it working with noapic or apic=off boot options.

i dont think its a eth0 problem.

That would make sense.

Whats the boot options for suse 92. to turn apic off? In gentoo its noapic.
Though, I dont boot my gentoo with apic turned off.

you can use noacpi, noapic as well. apci-off also works.

this is the output you wanted.

Code:
rushad@patel-dorm:~$ dmesg | grep eth0
eth0: forcedeth.c: subsystem: 01458:e000 bound to 0000:00:05.0
eth0: no IPv6 routers present

have you tested the noapic one on suse? I have tried this one on gentoo and it solves the exact same problem.

so any luck?? my gentoo works fine ( i reinstalled ) but ubuntu still hangs even when i am running livecd with no hard drive plugged in.

may be this is eth0 problem. noapci, nopaic options dont help on ubuntu and gentoo works without those options.
