Cool Suse install hangs at usb device activation

Hello Guys ( and girls?), i quite often come to this site to check out problems etc, so i thought it was time to register.

Im not exactly a linux newbie ( i use suse 10.1 on my internet pc ), but i have this problem when trying to install Suse 10.2 x86_64; it always hangs at usb device activation and will not go any further. Since i already have the disks for 10.1 x86, i thought i would see if this would also emulate the same problem. No!!! 10.1 x86 passes the usb device activation, ( init 16??? )but then will not recognize the 1st cd!!! Totally stuck, i would like to try out the 64bit version, but no joy with install. My gaming system specs are:

Pentium D805 2.66Ghz @ 3.2Ghz.
Asus P5PE-VM motherboard
768Mb DDR value Ram
Asus Geforce N6200
Creative Sound Blaster Live Value.

Since my system is mostly used for gaming i have a XP partition, but would like to investigate both 64bit systems and linux gamng as well.

I would really appreciate some help.

You need to do the install with as many options turned off as possible. It might be an acpi or driver issue. See if there's such thing as a "safe mode" installation that keeps the bells and whistles to a minimum.

Yes, try safe mode instlalation or text mode installation..

Do you have anything plugged into your USB ports?

Thanks mpapet and EclipseAgent, the problem was that the dvd-rom was set to auto in bios; as soon as i changed the setting to cd-rom, the installation went fine. Thanks for your replys.

After a very frustrating weekend trying to install 10.2 on my laptop I discovered something that might be useful to others.

First of all, the frustration was caused by the fact that I had very easily upgraded my desktop from 10.1 to 10.2. but my laptop hung shortly after choosing installation, no matter which variation I chose (using the same DVD). I also burned and tried a CD, same result.

Then, on the verge of giving up, I entered 'nosmp' as a solitary option and everything works fine, any one of the installation choices work, noapic etc.

I am not experienced enough to know what 'nosmp' does, but it certainly solved my problem.

BTW during my frustration I even (successfully) installed fedora core 6, but thankfully went back to trying to use 10.2. Which I am very glad about since it is most impressive.
