Maybe one of the Novell employees who is an official rep here on the LQ forum can help us out. I know they exist, that's why Jeremy waited to put up a SuSE forum, becasue they didn't have an official rep. Judging by the fact that we are now posting in the SuSE/Novell forum, and the fact that he announced and welcomed one as far as I remember, We have one. I'm sure that they could at least find someone who can answer this question, and definitively.

This is my 2 cents...

After trying out SuSE 9.0, I was hooked on SuSE. I like to keep up-to-date on my software, but with SuSE having one or more releases every year, the cost of maintaining the most recent SuSE is kind of expensive. So I made this pack with my self I would buy every other version.... So I bought SuSE 9.0, downloaded SuSE 9.1, bought SuSE 9.2, planned on downloading 9.3 but I ran into this forum.

I would like SuSE/Novell give an offering of the distribution on CD's and/or DVD's that contains just the media for previous buyers at a significant discount. This would requirer the user to register a "Boxed" version first. After the user register then they could get next version of SuSE at a significant discount. When I say "just the media" I mean just the DVD/CDs not the books. The books are great but after you go through them once you really don't need them. By doing this the cost should go down since they are sending just the media. Another idea is to let the previous buyers of SuSE download the latest version at a much much significant discount. In both instances the users of SuSE would be supporting SuSE financially.

OK... Hopefully this will be seen by an SuSE official and think "What a great idea!!!" but in German ;-)

If you look on Amazon, you will see that you can purchase the complete package or the upgrade.

Hope I do not upset anybody but I just downloaded the five cd set and cd one was broken. That is really the error I got. could you redo cd1 and post it to torrent so I can get it.
Or post 2 3,5 and 7 of 8.0 enterprise so I can replace the disks that went bad.

They can sell them because suse lets them.You notice they only sell DVD ISO's. When you buy Iso's from suse or any of the companies such as redhat.
What you are actually paying for is whatever support they are giving.

The price is not reflective of the hours spent on research and devel. time.

they say they only sell distros that are freely downloadable and charge the fee only for cd-burning. well at this moment the only way of installing that novell offers is a $99.95 box set.

i have to be honest - at this moment i have no resources to pay $100 for a linux distro and anyway i have no use for the support they are offering. i want to install 9.3 but do i have to wait 2 months for the ftp install? or could i legally obtain the iso's somewhere else? one of my reasons for switching to linux was to keep my software nice, free and legal. if i downloaded an illegal copy of suse then that would completely ruin the point.

If you look at the sight they do sell "SuSE 9.3 Professional 5 CD Set" I believe they send you media either DVDs and/or CDs via mail.

So if "SuSE lets them sell it". Does SuSE get a small profit?

I hear what you are saying, I am in the same boat!!! Just an FYI. I purchase SuSE 9.2 upgrade for $50. During a fresh installation of the SuSE 9.2 upgrade it did not ask me for a previous version of SuSE. Do I need the support line? Well the previous versions of SuSE I never called in. So by purchasing the Professional or the upgrade version, I am wasting my money because I wont use the support.

It is still cheaper I went through the whole buy now screen and it came up 15.95
plus they sell cd's I do not have a dvd.

Does 9.3 as well just amend the pointer to read 9.3 and the 64 bit version comes up.

I loaded the 64 bit network version by changing the pointer to 9.3 but couldn't get it to work.

The pointer gives a dvd iso but how do you get the 64 bit iso of 9.2?
