SuSE 9.2 shutdown & poweroff

I've installed SuSE 9.2 on another of my desktops. I did a clean install. However on shutdown,
SuSE 9.2 won't shut off the power. On the *same* machine, SuSE 9.1 shut the machine down without any problems. It's dual booted with Win2k, & windows shuts the machine off too.
The BIOS is still set to APM/ACPI, so that hasn't changed.
The last three lines of the SuSE shutdown procedure read:-

The system will be halted immediately:
Master resource Control: Runlevel 0 has been: reached
Skipped services in Runlevel 0: nfs

If I change to 'root' & issue the command: shutdown -h now
I get - stty: standard input: unable to perform all requested operations.

Anyone any ideas as to why SuSE 9.2 won't shut off the machine power?
