SuSE 9.1 - How to switch to Gnome?

Hi all,

I managed to install SuSE 9.1 Personal successfully including Gnome libraries. How to switch to Gnome from KDE? Gnome cannot be selected in the login screen as before (only "restart X server" and "shutdown" under menu).

There is nothing wrong with KDE, but I have always preferred Gnome.

Log out (end session only)
in the login screen there is a button 'menu'
select session type and gnome

Since the 9.1 Personal KDM GUI does not account for anything other than KDE, this is a trouble spot for those wanting to add other WM's to the missing session menu in KDM. I was able to add this element in 9.1P on a couple of occasions, but I honestly don't know what the procedure is since it just "appeared" after I downloaded some devel packages and tinkered with the KDE login manger.

This was not an issue with the 9.0 version or the most recent 9.2 release.

Maybe you should just use GDM. That will definitely work.

I know it sounds strange, but there really isn't a session type menu option in the 9.1 Personal version. At least not as a packaged element. I added it by downloading some devel files from the FTP version but I have no idea which one was the trigger.

when you install suse , you can choose what packages you want to install. Suse by default chooses only KDE, so you have to add Gnome or any other package required. Also I think you can install any package u want later using yast (+CDs).

sometimes i would start up as "init 3" and enter "startx gnome" and it will go to gnome without going to the default KDE. i too like gnome better...
