SUSE 10.1 Yast2 Problems

I just installed a freshly burned copy of SUSE 10.1. Everything is up and running, but every time I try to add some sources thru Yast, I have a problem. I get the mirrors added fine, then I hit FINISH and it just sits and "thinks" until I have to close it. It never saves the mirrors, so I can't install anything or update. Any ideas?

Until they get the package management nightmare worked out, I would suggest rug or smart.

I just got 10.1 installed and there is a delay, but just be patient. Just let it sit and it'll finish. I even suggest removing all sources from Yast2 and from Zenworks in the taskbar. Then just start adding them slowly and it'll work out.

Everyone is complaining about 10.1 not working perfectly but it has for me so far except for the slight change on how to install locally from a local partition but I found a different way around doing it.

Yast2 is slower than it was in 10.0 but so far Network Manager is working out. I just got Xgl working w/ KDE on an ATI card but its very buggy.

Is there a way to downgrade to 10.0 until things stablize?

When are the first set of patches set to be released? I'd like to upgrade to 10.1, but if problems like what you have stated exsist I'll wait.

Once you do get your sources set it is fine. At least as good as 10.
Anyone know of a good kde and gnome source?

Get Smart!

The new package management system is 90% of the problem with SUSE 10.1 if you ask me. It's written in Mono, (.NET for Linux). Yes, there are actually .exe files that run in the new SUSE YOU!

The other 10% is SUSE's leaning towards Gnome/GTK and away from QT/KDE. Not really unexpected when you consider that Novell is trying to capture the corporate desktop market, and has been working toward that end by purchasing Mono & Ximian desktop. Rug is from Ximian.

If you're a KDE user, then I'd say get Smart! :D

Specifically, take a look at these detailed instructions:

How to install and use smart on SUSE Linux 10.1
http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/

It comes preloaded with YAST installation sources, and works at the command line, interactive shell, or gui. Reminds me of the Gentoo Portage tool emerge, actually. This got my 10.1 installation updated faster than the original 10.0 YOU.

Heard about it from this article:

I suppose one could try slipping a SUSE 10 disc in and booting to it and selecting the option to upgrade and see if it works. Yast should warn of any problems before actualy going ahead with the down, er, upgrade.
However one will have to eventualy except that yast is going if not indeed gone and that zen is going to be the future. Then again with a kernel source and kde and gnome source one could keep 10 going until yast is totaly unsuported by mirrors.

SL 10.1 updates
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/update/10.1/

But among others bugs also delta-rpms aren't supported. LOL

My hint to you all. Disable zmd from running and use smart.

Download the newest smart packages with repo lists included from guru repository

Run "/etc/init.d/novell-zmd start" as root - that fixed it for me .

Yast crashes after new video card install

Yast worked...hmm... okay for me in 10.1, until I installed a new video card. Nvidia FX 5200. Once the new card was installed and the Nvidia drivers installed, Yast refused to work at all. It would open the first screen, but when asked to open anything else it would crash the screen to a black screen with one little white dash in the upper left hand corner of the monitor. It would just sit there forever until I would reboot. So...sigh.. now I cannot make any changes through Yast. Honestly, 10.1 is the very worst distribution I have ever encountered from SuSe. When in 10.2 coming out? Should I be afraid to try it?
Has anyone else had this type of Yast problem after installing a new video card? Solutions? Also, the trackball wheel has never worked in 10.1, no matter how it was set up. Solutions to this?
