Suse 10.1 Auto start the GUI ???
 

Hi there,

I've just installed Suse 10.1, but it won't automatically start the GUI.

I just get a black screen.

I can start Suse by using the 'Failsafe' mode and then typing 'startx', but after that I don't know how to fix it.

Any suggestions?

PS: I'm a newbie.

so you're saying X won't start?

do you have a fully working system without X? i.e. do you know how to log in and use linux from the command line?

The chances of linux not installing correctly are low, while the changes of X11 not finding the right video card or monitor are very very high.

An update...

No matter what I do, the GUI (which I assume is known as 'X') won't start.

I hear music, but I am getting the black screen again.

I seem to have a fully working system (lots of stuff/text is loaded when I start it in 'Failsafe' mode).

I can log in as 'root' but after that, I don't really know what to do.

Incidentally, I installed this Suse on top of Mandrake 10.1.

It also says (when it is loading)...

'The DMA on your hard drive is turned off'

I think you don't have your drivers for you video card set. You should post your card's vendor/model, which desktop you're using and what the screen says when it says entering level 5 and what it says when you type startx.

Yeah, it is a bit confusing!

1) Today I installed Suse 10.1.
2) But the X/KDE GUI wasn't appearing on the screen (via automatic logon).
3) I tried the 'Failsafe' mode and discovered that I could use 'startx' to start the X/KDE GUI (this worked once).
4) After rebooting and trying step 3) again, it wouldn't work again.

So, after my initial post, I found out that no matter how I got Linux started, I couldn't get a nice looking GUI.

As I type this, I'm reinstalling Suse with a different partition layout.

10.2 - install 10.2, why 10.1?

I don't have 10.2 on a disc.

And I also don't have a broadband connection.

Well...

That was certainly an effective waste of time.

The reinstallation did absolutely nothing :(

Time to say good bye to Suse ... forever.

if you're defeated that easily, then probably... yea, it is time.

10.2 because it is better, sometimes newer is better.

If defeated means spending my time more efficiently (with other Linux distros that actually can be bothered to start KDE for me) and in a more productive manner, then yes I am defeated.

When I hit a brick wall with this stuff, I can usually work my way through it. But if its going to take too much of my time, then I don't and move on.

But I don't say goodbye to a solid distro.... forever.
