[SOLVED] - SUSE 10.0 - K3b not working... mount of cdrw fails too!
 

Hi all Have installed SUSE 10.0 and wanted to try burning some pics from hard-disk to CD using K3b K3b reports the following: PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-117 (/dev/hdc) SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW232B (/dev/hdd) First when I started using K3b it reported that the burner was automounted and this can play havoc with CD/DVD burning and suggested to to modify the fstab file so I commented out the line below in the fstab file even though it has noauto assigned to it but not sure how the autofs works (which I checked in YAST and says it's not enabled anyway) : /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 Ok... Fired up K3b and got no message about automounting so thought all was ok... I selected the files I needed and went through the burn process but when I hit burn it reports that there is no medium in the burner. Open the burner and put in a fresh blank CD and still it says no medium! Arrrggggh!!! Thought there may be something odd going on so I put in a CD I know is ok (has a copy of dynebolic 1.4.1 on it - a live multimedia based linux distro). I try mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrw and even mount /dev/hdd /media/cdrecorder and I get "No medium found".... Something amiss with the burner? Any ideas? Forgot to mention: K3b version is 0.12.14.

I am using k3b together with subfs mounting without any problems. I simply ignore the k3b warning and the hardware popups upon inserting a CD.

However, are you sure that k3b uses hdd as burning device? Check Settings -> Configure k3b -> Devices
If necessary, try to point k3b directly to the device file (/dev/hdd instead of /dev/cdrecorder).

Have checked K3b settings and it's already pointing to /dev/hdd and not /media/cdrecorder

I still find it odd that I can't mount the burner using normal mount command from x-term.

At your suggestion I uncommented out the line in fstab and tried k3b again - got the automount warning popup again. I selected some files and went though the burn wizard. Once again when I inserted the blank CD it didn't recognise it (saying no media) and I then selected the Force button... after some time I got the following error:
X mkisofs did not exit cleanly
X Data does not fit on the disk
i Enable overburning in the advanced K3b settings to burn anyway.

Stupid question: are you sure the CD was blank/inserted the right way? It happened to me once that I inserted a no-name CD (no prints) upside down.

Unless the burner is upside-down I think I got that bit right! ;-) he he he

Very odd I think (the K3b issue not your question!).

After the fstab change do I need to restart anything/reboot?

Usually not, but I am not sure if the subfs module needs to be loaded before automatic mounting works again (try 'modprobe subfs'). But for manual mounting, definitely not.

EDIT: I just found that you may need to select the correct burning device in the "Burn" dialog as well, especially if there are two devices present (but your other drive is a DVD-ROM only?).

Yep other drive is a DVD-ROM and the burner is the only available device in the Burn dialog...

Just tried it again now - and still have the K3b dialog "Waiting for Disk"...

I might have to pull the PC case off and check all is ok with the jumpers on the drives... I got this PC as a freebie from work (just needed to replace faulty mobo and add a half-decent graphics card), and I didn't check if all was ok before.

I'll fire-up a live CD and see if the burner works there.

EDIT: I've loaded up a few live CDs and I watched the boot-up messages.. seems as though there's an issue with the burner as they report errors. Time to buy a new CD burner methinks! Any apps/commands I can use to 'test' the burner in the meantime? I still haven't opened the case to check everything though...

I once had a similar issue when I had a writer as slave and a ROM as master. K3b seemed to favor the master for writing. I swapped the two and the problem went away. No changes to fstab were required and the drives mount automatically.

I'll give that a go as well... But I thnk the burner is toast.. Can't seem to read discs... I have my BIOS set to boot from CD drives and putting a live CD in the burner fails to start but putting it in the other drive starts up fine.

Not being able to mount the burner with a known working CD leads me to believe that the all is not well with it.

I have another PC with similar setup (DVD/CD burner and DVD rom) and live CD fires up on both. Not sure if I have the burner as slave or master in that one.. but can't tinker with that PC (much!) as my wife will not be happy (should something go wrong!).

Anyway, burners are cheap these days so may as well lash out a few $$$ and get me a new one.

Just another idea: maybe you should try to alter the DMA mode. Can be done with YaST -> Hardware -> IDE DMA mode

IMHO - a DVD dual layer writer is well worth the small increase in $. Over 8GB for backups, does everything a CD R/W does, and burning openSuSE's 5 CDs on a single DVD sure makes installs easier. Lite-On drives are low cost and have served me well.

Woooo-hoooo! There she burns!

Burning now all working with K3b AND when I put a CD in the drive the dialog appears about new hardware detected.

Solution: Bought myself a new LG Dual Layer DVD/CD burner. And even got a 15% discount on it to boot! Yep Fragos you're right about the small cost of buying a DL burner! Lite-on! Err I mean right-on. :)

Sometimes it's not the software that's at fault... ;)
