Unhappy Strange volume control problem

I've been having a couple of problems with the audion in SuSE 9.1. When I log in under my username, mp3s and cds play just fine, no probs at all. When I log in as root or my missus logs in, mp3 playback is very quiet, almost to the point of being silent (but cd audio works). I've tried setting every volume control I can find in Kmix, xmms and kaffeine to max but it's still quiet. Log back in with my user name and everything plays fine.

I've tried setting the master volume in yast too.

Any ideas?

Worked it out after reading a few more threads. Launched alsamixer in the term and increased the volume on the VIA DXS channel.

Still not sure why it defaulted to that on to accounts and not the other.
