I recently switched from Kanotix to Suse 10.1. When searching for packages in the software installation tool I find that a lot of packages are missing. Looking in YaST>Software>Installation Source I find the following source: Name = YUM, URL = http://suse.cbn.net.id/i386/update/10.1. Are there any other repositories that work well with Suse 10.1 and are more complete?

You could install the smart package manager from guru's site. It comes preconfigured with many third party and update repos for various versions of Suse. There is also a nice gui frontend called smart-gui.

I have a new problem. I found a thread with info on usefull reposotories for 10.1 but when trying to add it in YaST2 it is extremely slow. In fact, almost everything you do in YaST2 is painfull. Is there any cure for this? It seems that lots of other people on the forum also experience this. How can I resolve this?

Yast is a bit slow, however the first time you connect to a repo, it has to d/l all the info so it takes a bit and if you marked it to refresh every time.... needless to say I am a big SMART convert. It may not be the super gui like yast, but everythings soo easy it. and its pretty smart too (pardon the pun)

Novell shipped very buggy package management tools in Suse 10.1. There is a fix somewhere (you need to run the online update which may or may not work poperly), but I think most people had already moved to the smart packae manager because it just works and isn't as slow as YAST.

I assume the smart application you are referring to is the one that comes with SuSE. I typed the smart command into a terminal and it said I should install it from the CD media. Busy doing it now, YaST taking its time as usuall.

To be safe, uninstall it first using YAST or the rpm command.

After the I got the error the first time I updated the guru source as per instructions on the site. What is wrong?

It seems like you did not download the main smart package. The packages you need are smart, smart-gui and smart-addons. When you have downloaded and saved them somewhere, install them all at the same time by doing something like,
If there are any complaints about missing packages, download those as well.

I didn't download any version of smart, I used the y2pmsh command mentioned on the spinink site. I added guru's repositories so it is supposed to download the necessary packages automatically. I now downloaded all the RPM packages from his site and will instal it using YaST.
