The three main factors affecting the speed of that operation are: cpu, RAM, and number of packages installed. Older systems with slower cpus and less RAM will take longer that newer systems with fast cpus and more RAM. More packages will take longer than less packages.

It used to take me about two minutes to get to the package lists to select packages for installation/removal. With my upgraded computer, it now takes less than 10 seconds.

So, perhaps a hardware upgrade is what you need. Or, start removing packages you don't use, unless they are required by packages that you do use.

...or maybe he/she is running 10.1 with the completely FUBAR YaST/YOU/ZEN software managmeent program.

It has been well-documented that loading software management with YaST now takes between one and three decades to come up. This is due to some far-reaching attempt to have it load information you didn't need in 10.0 but are now required to find out.

I'd suggest using SMART.

Of course, right now, the smart repositories are apparently broken, too.

All these problems with 10.X is why I've installed Debian (via Kanotix and Knoppix). After 9.3, SuSE seems to have gone downhill.

My 2 cents: If you want to use SuSE, stick with either v9.3 or v10.0 A few months ago I attempted to install v10.1 (previously I was running v9.3) but after banging my head against the wall for far too long, I pulled the plug and went to v10.0.

Just to be clear, SuSE is one of my favorite distros (the other being Slackware) and it has my full support. For whatever reason though, this v10.1 release was (for me anyway) difficult to use, to the point that I abandoned it, and will wait for v11.0 or whatever the next release might be. There are a variety of other threads in this subforum covering this topic; you might be interested in searching for them for other points of view
