Angry Slow Web Browsing On My Suse 9.1 Pro, have tried it all!!

hello guys

i have tweaked the /etc/modprobe.conf files several times according to the directions found in this forum (and some crazy ideas from other forums as well); however, none of these have worked on my machine.

no matter how i edit my modprobe file, when booting some warning messages appear several times during the booting process but the problem with slow browsing still remains there!!

the topic is, that when i start firefox and point to a website or one of my bookmarks, firefox takes about 20-30 second to start navigating to the page (it seems that is waiting for something) and it's becoming really annoying because i have all of my settings set up correctly. LoseDoze has almost instant access to the same page and both (LoseDoze & Suse) are correctly configured (isp's dns, gateway, etc)

i mean, internet works, but you have to be veeeeeery patient when browsing with Suse.

has anyone found a workaround for this other than editing the modprobe file?
or perhaps i'm editing it the wrong way: i'd like to post mine upon request if anyone is willing to help me...

i will greatly appreciate your aid on this issue [i don't have Job's patience while browsing on the internet ]

thanks in advance
bye

As you already mentioned modprobe.conf, you probably have tried this:

http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/1...illa_ipv6.html

Another option (for PPPoE connections) is to decrease the Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU) in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-id-<your card>. Per default no value is set (automatic), but you could specify a value. For DSL connections 1492 has been recommended elsewhere.

This information is from a german forum: http://www.linux-club.de/viewtopic.php?t=16677

It would have been nice, if you had included more specific information on what you have tried already. So we could avoid to tell you stuff you already tested.

I've noticed this as well. This thread will help a lot. If you wouldn't mind ofvergara posting your modprobe changes that you made so that I can start there? on the german forum they mention ipv6. I aslo remember something during installation that ipv6 isn't enabled in suse. You have to edit some file. I'll investigate and repost what I find here.

if you beat me to it please post your results & info.

update: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/1...illa_ipv6.html

will see if that works.

well,

i have tried the workaround found in the suse portal.

as i have 9.1, logically i won't apply the one intended for 9.0 (which, by the way, the answer for 9.0 seems more logical than the answer for 9.1).

i am going to try it again with the modprobe change; otherwise, if i see no positive results, i'll post my original modprobe, so you may give me an insight on what is happening

thanks for replying
bye

EDIT:
this is what i have tried besides the solution found in suse portal (still no luck, though =( :

>>>>>

"Problem with connection speed (slow web browsing)
*****

I had the same problem with a slow connection speed to the net while using Suse (Firefox) but I have cured the problem by:

1) Goto the file /etc/modprobe.conf while as ROOT (File Manager-Super User Mode).

2) Open the file with Kwrite and look for the line ----
alias net -pf 10 ipv6

3) Change the line to read ----
alias net -pf10 off ipv6 (just add "off")

4) Save file and close.

5) Shut down and reboot.

6) Start your browser (Firefox in my case) and try it.

*****

Internet REALLY Slow

Answer: open Gedit as root and browse to /etc/modprobe.conf
add these two lines:
alias net-pf-10 ipv4
install ipv4 /bin/true
Save and reboot.

On reboot run terminal as SU
# type the following
# ifup eth0
# type Enter
..."

END OF MESSAGE

Hi ofvergara

Have you had success yet?

Here's my two cents:

Run lsmod and check if there is any mention of ipv6 loaded modules.

If yes try to deactivate them in /etc/modprobe.conf. BUT, not the way I've seen in a couple of posts. This is how I did it:

Change

alias net-pf-10 ipv6

to

alias net-pf-10 ipv6
install ipv6 /bin/true

Notice there is no mention of 'off'.

Reboot.
lsmod

Now I've got no mention of ipv6 in an lsmod.

This solution is the one posted on suse portal so you might have tried it already. But it's the one specifically for 9.1. towards the end of the page - did you only try the more intuitive 9.0 one? ((http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/1...illa_ipv6.html). Anyway, it worked for me, whereas the posts saying add 'off' to the end of the alias did nothing for me.

Cheers

guys, thank you very much for sending me your modified modprobe!!!
i replaced mine with this one and it worked!!

let me tell you more on this:

i have isolated the issue. i have now applied the modprobe trick from the suse portal page successfully with the modprobe file sent to my email (no more warning messages shown during initial boot), and removed one of my 2 isp dns addresses. i only have 1 isp dns.

the isolation in this issue is, with the aforementioned modification, that internet works like an arrow inside kde, because it loads an application called kinternet when kde starts up (i don't know what it does because it loads and then disappears from the system tray, as a matter of fact it never stays there for more than 1 second, then goes away) that connects me to the internet with no problem.

ths issue is, that i am using xfce4 as my main window manager (not kde), and inside xfce4, firefox has the time-out issue and the slow browsing problem.
of course i can't apply kinternet there, it says something for qinternet.

so, here's my new questions:
1) when checking suse desktop pictures in forums, i see that kinternet (the icon resembling an electric plug) stays in the system tray... why mine doesn't? (although is a minor issue)

2) and... why internet is not working when using xfce4? (which is odd, because when i use kde, internet works instantly now due to the kinternet application)
* what does qinternet do?
* how do i run it at start up when logging into xfce4?

thanks guys for all your support and hoping this post will help other people having the same issues.

Omar
