shutdown but no reboot

I have Suse 10 installed on my laptop with versions both 32 and 64 bit.
The 32-bit install the following error messages during bootup:

<3>udev[2057]: run_program: open /dev/null failed
<3>udev[2057]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/modprobe' failed

The system freezes at reboot right before it's supposed to shut down and reboot.

In the reboot process at the following message:
'Sending all processes the KILL signal'
there are 3 blank lines, for two of them the status is 'done' but the middle one says 'missing'.
The system gets to the point where it says:
'Preparing to reboot now' and after a few seconds there's a blank screen or vertical lines even in text mode, then crash, only the power button helps.

There is no accessible dev/null directory on the system and trying to manually create it the system says it already exists.
I guess that might have to do something with the reboot issue.

However the 'Shutdown' process goes fine...

you do have a 64 bit processor? , if so, you should boot the 64 bit version if not
the 32 bit is the correct one.
(one of them won't work anyway)

Yes, the 64bit install runs somewhat smoother only my modem driver does not function at all under it, that's why i'm using the 32bit version. But thanks for your reply, I think I will give a try to other distros as well.
