Screen blanks on GUI start at boot

I've just installed SuSE on my AMD Athlon64 with an nVidia mainboard (forgot the exact model). I also use an old CRT from...Trinitron I believe.

I've used this configuration before and it worked fine. Then I moved the server and had to connect it to a new, different CRT. Now that I've moved it back, when SuSE boots, just at the graphical username/password prompt, the screen blanks, going into power saving mode.

The only remedy I have found is to boot into FAILSAFE mode at the GRUB selection.

Do I need to set the monitor back to the old one for X11 to work properly? What can I do to try to find a remedy?

Reconfigure your X. It the two CRTs had somehow different settings, your xorg.conf might not work with the other one..you could just edit the file or use some configuration tool like xorgconf or similar (or was it xorgconfig?)

That's a start at least -- to make sure the settings are ok, like refresh rates etc.

I knew I had to reconfigure X but I had forgotten how to go about doing that simply.

I tried your suggestion (it's xorgconfig) but was presented with configuration options for every single aspect of the envrionment, which I wasn't prepared to handle.

So, I had the genius idea of trying yast, which I should have done in the first place! Yast->Hardware->Graphic devices autoconfigured everything and now it works fine.

Thanks b0uncer
